"The only good thing at this hotel is the young manager from the Tyrolean area of Austria. He's smart, understanding, solution oriented. The management should pay him 3x market because he was the saving grace to make my stay there tolerable.
This review is about everything except for the fine young man who is the manager.
I traveled 20 hours door to door to arrive at this hotel that I chose primarily on the room photos, reviews and location. The front desk woman was cold, gave me a key, and I went to a 6th floor room that looked like a former supply closet. Not at all like the pictures. The bed was stuffed into a stark white room, visibly sagging, bedspread not neat. Felt dirty. could not turn around. No where to put luggage or a dresser. Chipped paint.
I went downstairs, and told the woman that this room is unacceptable. She made me go back upstairs with her to show her the reasons I found it so. As if I had to prove it to her judgement. She berated me, that she has no other room, "it's not possible", and that I made a mistake booking through Booking.com and should just go call Booking for a solution. She said they have no control what photos Booking shows, and I should know that. Are you kidding? To call Booking the night after a long trip in a city that is sold out? I asked for the manger.
The young manager is a super star. He quickly placed me in a room that was clean, looked like the photo, and he apologized for the difficulty. He later helped me to plan walks and activities. Patiently helped me to download an app and purchase a train ticket.
Twice, the hotel did not follow through on my wake up call request. The first time, the manager said the phone did not work, and to ask for a person to knock on the door the next time. I did, but no one knocked. I was late for events both times. The front desk acts like they have no clue there was a request. I made it face to face, in person.
This place also smells like a combination of cleaning chemicals and perfume. The walls are painted black, chipped in the room, and the theme throughout is black and gold. Room feels dark.
Overall, I feel utterly ripped off. This was my European vacation for which I've saved up both money and time. This experience clouded my Vienna experience with nearly zero-hospitality in a well-marketed, but clearly over-rated hotel.
This place is a 2-star. I'm in a 4-star one in Salzburg now and the difference is night and day. Do not stay at Hotel Am Konzerthaus in Vienna unless you expect to be disappointed, uncomfortable, and possibly unwelcome.
Again, this review is about everything except for the fine young man who is the manager. In any professional environment, he will stand out. I appreciate his kindness and help."
