"We came home a couple of days ago from the Samira resort and this had been our first stay but we are regular visitors to Kalkan and know the area quite well.
I will start with the many positives of this resort.
Our welcome was good with a quick tour and information given to us and directions to our apartment.
The pool area, bar and restaurant are all fantastic and we found the food to be really good (we only ate lunches ) prices are reasonable and the staff and service are great.
There are ample sunbeds and pool towels provided which is a nice touch. The whole area around the pool and bar is well designed, spacious with comfy sofas and nice furnishings. An addition of a further mezzanine seating area was really lovely. The pool showers and toilets are also in keeping with the other areas.
The views are fabulous and the location despite being above the busy D400 was not noisy at all, nor did the walk into town bother us - although if you are not fit or are less mobile you would need a taxi (inexpensive though at a fixed 200tlr per trip departing from the taxi rank) We walked back most evenings also although it is a hill - and without my enthusiastic encouragement to walk my husband would have probably got more taxies! You need the extra steps though given the lovely food and ample drinks consumed in fabulous Kalkan !
So...the not so great bits :(
We already expected the apartment to be dated having read other reviews prior to out arrival. This was indeed the case...a blast right back to the early 80's with very dated, worn and depressing furnishings. The actual size was good however, with ample storage.
The corridors are dark and smelled of stage cigarettes!
Beware that on the polished stone stairs some of the safety treads are worn away which can be lethal when wet!
So... our apartment - The twin beds were awful and uncomfortable and the bedding was shocking! no top sheets provided and just very worn, thin cotton cover to each bed (nothing matched) a very worn bobbly bottom sheet covering a mattress that I dare not look at. The two pillows for each bed were extremely old and lumpy - very unpleasant to sleep on :(
There was only one bedside table so my husband had to balance his items on one of the old dining chairs from the living area. ( a true gent for letting me have the table though!)
The fridge was just a joy to behold! the inside was rusty with the added addition of previous guests rancid food leftovers encrusted to the bottom and shelves! I wouldn't have dreamt of putting anything other than bottled water in it. The freezer compartment in the top was like the lost glaciers of the arctic!! sooo very frozen up you couldnt have fitted anything in it had you wanted to!
The room was never cleaned at any point in the 8 night duration of our stay, nor was the bedding changed - despite putting the "please clean my room" sign on the outside of the door!
Infact, the room was dirty when we arrived with stale crisps next to the bed and sticky bits on the floors and surfaces. I dropped a hair scrunchie off the side of the dressing table and when I pulled it out it was so covered with dirt, dust and other peoples god knows what I threw it away!
The toilet bins did get emptied daily which I guess is a small win!
We managed to get clean towels on 2 occasions but when you think that your holiday days usually begin with a morning shower and a further shower before going out in the evening this is really bad!! ...That brings me on to the complete lack of hot water for at least 90% of the time! mornings were a complete no go unless you are a fan of the freezing cold shower! I tried showering at all times of the day trying to catch some hot water but only on 2 occasions did I actually manage a bareable shower. I have very long thick hair and I can tell you trying to wash this in cold water is really no joke!
We were unlucky with our room location I think as we had a balcony room but it was at the far end facing a massive brick wall so got no sun apart from a small sliver early evening. The room got no sun to it at all which made it even more depressing. It came as no shock that the balcony are was never cleaned either - even after we had a couple of days of rain the tiles were lethal and sat in water which slowly drained away. Needless to say we never used this facility.
We never used the air conditioning as being October and not hot enough to need it - especially with the lack of bedding I was actually chilly on several evenings.
It is an older style building and also worth baring in mind that there are no lifts so you will need to carry your luggage up the stairs. There is also zero soundproofing which means regardless of your preference you will be waking up whenever the guests above you decide!! unfortunately for us for the first 3 days this happened to be a family whish arose each day at 7.30am and the sounds of Pepper Pig radiated through the floor at what felt like a ridiculous volume...as did the constant clomping about and door banging.
Oh yes... the banging doors.. the furnishings as I mentioned are very dated and worn, especially the doors to the balconies which dont fit properly, ours had broken glass panels in the top - probably as a result of the need to bang them to get them to close. This, along with the main apartment doors which are the old heavy honey pine really do bang with gusto!! Like I say be prepared to wake whenever your neighbours decide!
I will briefly mention the mouldy bathroom and kitchen cupboards, which were in keeping with the dilapidated theme and complete lack of cleaning .
I can genuinely say that this is the first time I have ever felt absolutely zero need to leave a tip for a cleaner!!
I am aware that some of the apartments at the Samira are due to be overhauled soon which will no doubt be a massive improvement but I would also say to the samira management that there is absolutely no excuse for things to be neglected and dirty! this needs to be addressed as the hotel does have a lot going for it.
We had booked this trip as an extra and the price to be fair was not bad. Would I stay in the future?? yes I would for the right price and the hope that I got a refurbished apartment as the rest of the hotel and facilities is really lovely.
I am relieved that we had read previous review prior to our visit as it gave us the forewarning we definitely needed. despite he fact that I love Kalkan and never wish to leave I don't think I could have coped with another night in our room though.
Oh ...and the WiFi is pants! non existent in the room and very intermittent in the pool/bar areas :("
