All the sights in easy reach
An eclectic mix of old new, Barrio de las Letras is a neighbourhood that combines historical charm with modern city life. Think 18th century buildings that are now home to trendy bars, restaurants, and hotels. And there’s no better example than Catalonia Las Cortes.
In a past life this palace was the home of the Duke of Noblejas, and much of the original character has been lovingly restored. From the grand staircase that sits at the heart of the hotel to the original frescoes that adorn the ceilings, this is a snapshot of 18th century Madrid.
Once you’ve got a taste for the historical, stroll 10 minutes west and you’ll find yourself at Plaza Mayor – the undisputed heart of historic Madrid. A few minutes further and you can tick off the Royal Palace of Madrid and the city’s impressive cathedral, too. Step out of the hotel and head east, on the other hand, and you’ll be met with the expansive green space of Retiro Park. Stroll through the trees, find a quiet spot to get lost in a good book, or rent yourself a pedalo and get out on the lake that sits at its centre.
If your legs have had enough, take a load off and whizz back to base on the metro; it’ll shave a few minutes off your commute, too. Stop off in the Gastrobar for a bite to eat or a well-earned drink before calling it a night – or before heading out to see what Madrid has to offer after-dark.
