"Stayed here 2 years ago, so decided to come back as we had an enjoyable time on the last visit.
As it’s a very popular hotel, there always seems to be a steady stream of people waiting to check in, so be prepared for a small wait whilst they check you in. But check-in was smooth, gave us all the details we needed re meal times, locations of restaurant, wifi etc
This time we opted for a sea view room. Paid extra, however were disappointed with it. Yes it was a sea view which was great and what we paid for, but the balcony had a solid wall rather than the metal bars of other balconies, so when you sat down, you could just see the sea and no more. Also, it was in the San Jorge building, so it was facing east, so after about 11am each day, you had no sun on the balcony. We were only there for 6 nights, so didn’t make a fuss, but if we were there longer, then we might have went and asked to see if we could change rooms. For others thinking of booking a sea view, maybe contact the hotel to see if you can be given one that’s in the Antigua part of the complex and faces south.
Some of our neighbours must have been smokers, as you could small cigarette smoke when they were out on their balconies.
ROOMS
As we’ve stayed before, we knew what to expect. Yes, it’s a bit outdated. But its functional and does what it needs to do. It’s only a 3* afterall. Don’t think anything has changed since our last visit. Beds reasonably comfy, extra pillows in the wardrobe if needed. Safe still on the floor inside the wardrobe. Hard to reach of you have any mobility issues. Good size bathroom and we always had plenty of hot water. Some of the towels need to replaced as a few were threadbare or had small holes.
Housekeeping was a bit erratic. One day they were in and out in under 5 minutes, just cleaned the bathroom and made the beds. Another day they cleaned the bathroom but didn’t make the beds. One day they didn’t leave us any hand towels, but 2 extra bath ones instead. One day they would be there at 10am and the next it was 3pm. But they were always nice and pleasant people and to be fair, we don’t leave a messy room so there’s very little that needs done anyway each day.
RESTAURANT
The restaurant food was decent enough, had themed evenings, always a good choice and most of it was hot. All the usual fayre you expect at a hotel buffet, and the soups were always lovely. Just a little disappointed that the desserts were pretty much the same every night.
At busy times, it takes them longer to clear tables, so you might need to hunt for a clean table or ask a member of staff to clear one for you.
One thing that wasn’t nice, was the “bacon” in the morning. When I say “bacon”, it wasn’t bacon, but more pressed ham/bacon scraps into what looked like a bacon shape. It wasn’t that nice. Bring back real bacon please.
ENTERTAINMENT
Mix of evening entertainment, karaoke, bingo, local acts etc. The entertainment room does get busy very quickly, so if there’s a show you want to see you need to get a quick dinner and then bag your seat. Otherwise, you can sit just outside at the pool side or in the square in the middle of the hotel.
However, and this really annoyed me, people were “reserving” their tables, having a pre-dinner drink and then going for dinner whilst leaving their jackets, books, cards, drinks etc on the table to make it look like they had just popped out. But it was so they could get that table after they had dinner. We saw a few people doing this. This is not on, and I was so tempted to just move their stuff off the table. Its not fair on others. One couple did that every night for the 6 nights we were there.
BAR AND SNACK BAR
Standard all inc stuff. Cruzcampo beer on tap, local spirits and wine or cava by the bottle if you ask for it. They do have premium drinks if you want for an additional cost. All Inc cocktails are local spirits but the ones we tried were all nice.
Staff all great, recognised a few faces from 2 years ago which was nice.
The snack bar had a small menu of food you can get, along with ice cream, coffee and all the usual drinks. Nice to see proper coke etc being served.
AREA
Caleta de Fuste is a nice area for walking and you can walk on both directions from the hotel, right up to the airport or down past the beach heading for the salt flats. Its mostly level and you can catch sight of the wee chipmunks as you wander. Nice big beach, watersports available as well and a couple of bars/cafes down the beach area as well. Plenty of shops for souvenirs, daily essentials as well as bars and restaurants.
There is a market as well, but we didn’t go this time. Think its on twice a week.
We would return to the Elba again, just wouldn’t pay the extra for a sea view room. Overall had a great break and was nice to get a bit of warmth away from a cold November Scotland."
