"We stayed at 138 Liberdade Hotel in Lisbon, and while the property sits in one of the poshest areas of the city — Avenida da Liberdade, right by Gucci, YSL, and Louis Vuitton — the overall experience was underwhelming.
📍 Location – 9/10
The hotel’s best feature is its prime location. Shopping, metro, dining, and Lisbon’s luxury strip are all within walking distance. Unfortunately, that’s where most of the positives end.
🚪 Check-In & Room Issues
Our stay didn’t start well. We were initially given a PWD room where the toilet was so high my feet were hanging when seated. Worse, the extra bed I had pre-requested and prepaid for (two weeks in advance) wasn’t provided.
After raising the issue, they did change our room (in fairness), but it was smaller.
The VIP welcome wine and pastel de nata included in my booking was forgotten — only provided after I reminded them.
The bathroom design was disappointing: no bathtub, no bidet, and an awkward open layout with no proper partition between the toilet and shower. The sink was strangely shaped, and the overall dark black décor made the room feel gloomy.
🥐 Breakfast & Snacks
Breakfast was basic buffet-style with some hot dishes available to order. Unfortunately, while the plating looked good, the taste and quality were more 2/5 — not on par with Lisbon’s excellent food scene.
Snacks were offered 24/7, but choices were limited to pastel pastries, often left out with flies around, which was unappetizing.
🍷 Service & Hospitality
There were repeated lapses:
- No extra bed initially,
- No welcome wine and tart until I insisted,
- A welcome drink letter with a typo, addressed to another guest!
The one bright spot in service was Paulo, the shuttle driver, who provided insightful history during the free hotel-to-airport transfer. His warmth and knowledge were a refreshing contrast to the rest of the experience. Also Diogo who helped us moved from the initial room we were placed in which I honestly think was a mistake from the concierge who checked us in. My family heard him say we're in room 208 but he gave us room 205 key.
✨ Overall
While 138 Liberdade boasts an excellent location, the experience fell short of expectations for the price point and area. Service felt inconsistent, amenities were lacking, and the overall comfort level just wasn’t there.
If you want to be close to Lisbon’s luxury shops, this may work — but if you’re seeking a true 5-star Lisbon experience with polished service and memorable dining, there are better choices."
