"# Arcanus Hotels Trendline Side – 5 stars on paper, disappointing reality!
**A family hotel with significant weaknesses in cleanliness, gastronomy, service, and children's offerings – not a recommendation from us.**
We spent our family vacation with our three-year-old son at the Arcanus Hotels Trendline Side. After several vacations in Turkey and experiences with other 5-star hotels, we can say: This hotel was one of the bigger disappointments for us.
Anyone booking a hotel of this category with All Inclusive Plus does not expect perfection, but well-maintained rooms, clean restaurants, reasonable gastronomy, competent service, and family-friendly leisure options. Exactly these basic expectations were not met in numerous areas during our stay.
While the hotel does have a modern basic structure and some quite positive facilities. Our overall impression, however, was that there are significant differences between the high-quality marketing and the actual level of service and quality.
## Location and surroundings – not very attractive and not for leisurely walks
The hotel is located on a side street in the Çolaklı district. We found the immediate surroundings to be unattractive and uninviting.
In our opinion, anyone who likes to leave the hotel in the evening, go for a leisurely walk, or stroll along a beautiful promenade is in the wrong place here.
There is no well-maintained promenade in the immediate vicinity, as one knows from other parts of the Side region. From our perspective, the existing shopping options are also not very interesting.
You can reach the Mall of Side in about 15 minutes and the old town of Side in around 24 minutes by dolmuş. The beach is about a twelve-minute walk away; alternatively, there is a free shuttle.
The transport connection is therefore quite usable. However, the immediate surroundings offer hardly any vacation atmosphere.
## Room – catastrophic cleaning and poor sleeping comfort
Our room on the ground floor of building 3 with a pool view was an imposition upon arrival.
The furnishings were clearly worn out and the state of cleanliness was absolutely unacceptable to us.
We found hair on the pillow and on the lamp, dirty surfaces, glass marks, as well as contaminants on the floor that apparently came from a diaper.
Such conditions are unacceptable to us in any hotel category – especially not in a five-star hotel. The defects were documented photographically.
The sleeping comfort was also disappointing. We found the mattresses to be extremely hard and the pillows significantly too high. Upon inquiry, the reception explained to us that no alternative pillows were available.
A pillow menu or at least a simple selection of different pillows, as we know it from other 5-star hotels, did not exist.
We explicitly cannot recommend our room in this condition.
## Main restaurant – monotonous food, poor cleanliness, and organizational chaos
The gastronomy was one of the hotel's biggest weaknesses.
The food was overall average and, after a few days, extremely monotonous. The dishes were repeated frequently, and we missed real culinary variety.
In addition, there were recurring organizational problems. Missing plates and missing cutlery at the buffet were a regular occurrence during our stay.
Sometimes even the staff we spoke to did not know what to do. One repeatedly had the impression that basic restaurant procedures were not properly organized.
### Breakfast – lots of presentation, little real selection
We found the breakfast particularly disappointing.
Anyone who knows the often very varied breakfast buffets of Turkish hotels will be sobered here from our point of view.
With muesli and cereals, the selection consisted essentially of oatmeal, cornflakes, as well as colorful and chocolate-containing breakfast products.
We searched in vain for a decent selection of natural muesli, various types of grain, or nuts.
Also with other products, apparent variety was created through repetitions. For example, several jam bowls were ready, although the varieties partially repeated themselves.
For us, that had little to do with a high-quality and varied breakfast.
### Children's buffet – visually present, content-wise almost meaningless
**The so-called children's area in the restaurant was one of the biggest disappointments for us.**
While a visually child-friendly buffet station with colorful figures does exist. However, we could practically not identify an actually varied and independent children's buffet during our stay.
In the morning, the selection consisted essentially of cereals. In the evening, there were regularly hamburgers, without us being able to determine a noteworthy changing children's menu there.
Thus, the children's area was for us more decoration than a seriously thought-out gastronomic offering for families.
We missed child-friendly, varied, and balanced meals that go beyond sweet breakfast cereals and hamburgers.
Especially at a hotel that appeals to families with children, we expect significantly more.
**A colorfully decorated buffet does not make a good children's restaurant. What is decisive is what is actually offered – and that was extremely meager for us.**
### Coffee – inedible for us in the main restaurant
The coffee was also a disappointment.
It made no difference whether it came from the machine or the pot: For our taste, the coffee in the main restaurant was barely drinkable.
We regularly observed other vacationers who preferred to get their coffee from the Italian coffee machine in the brasserie located one floor up.
The fact that one has to go to another floor in a 5-star hotel to get a reasonably tasty breakfast coffee speaks for itself.
### Cleanliness – visibly soiled equipment and objects
Cleanliness in the restaurant was particularly critical for us.
A microwave was clearly soiled on the inside with food residue and splatters. A napkin box on a restaurant table also showed visible contamination.
We documented both photographically.
Especially in areas where food is prepared or used by guests, we expect careful and regular cleaning.
In our impression, these basic hygiene standards were not consistently maintained.
### Restaurant terrace – smokers are favored, families move elsewhere
We also found the layout of the outdoor terrace to be not very family-friendly.
The limited seating is divided into smoking and non-smoking areas. In our estimation, the smoking area was about a third larger.
This resulted in families with children having to move either to the smoking area or to the main restaurant when smoke-free seats were unavailable.
In a family-oriented hotel of this category, we would have expected a different weighting and sufficient smoke-free outdoor seating.
## Bars and All Inclusive Plus – high-quality designation, disappointing drinks
The beverage concept did not convince us either.
Although international spirits are offered at the lobby bar, by no means are all of them included in the All-Inclusive-Plus package. An additional surcharge is required for certain brand-name drinks.
The fact that premium drinks sometimes cost extra is fundamentally understandable. The actual selection and the differences between the bars were nevertheless disappointing to us.
For example, Caipirinha and Mojito were available at the lobby bar, but not at the pool bar.
The included wines, the sparkling wine, and various cocktails were barely drinkable for our taste. Juices and soft drinks also failed to convince us in terms of quality.
We captured the additional beverage prices and the varying selection in photographs.
## Service – even simple questions sometimes overwhelm the staff
From our perspective, the service was not at the level we expect from a 5-star hotel.
We experienced a particularly striking example right on the evening of our arrival around 10 p.m.
We simply wanted to get warm milk for our three-year-old son.
The employee at the bar understood our question in English without any problems, but explained that warm milk was only available in the main restaurant, which was already closed.
The following day, this information turned out to be incorrect.
We experienced a similar situation at breakfast as well. One employee could not help us with our request for warm milk and simply responded with a shrug.
This is not about an extraordinary request, but rather an everyday inquiry from a family with a small child.
Unfortunately, such situations were not isolated incidents. We also received unclear or contradictory answers at times regarding other questions about restaurant procedures and hotel services.
Communication worked mostly in English or with the help of translation apps. Individual employees spoke German. The linguistic diversity of the staff was not the actual problem for us, but rather the partially missing knowledge about the hotel's own offerings.
We also addressed the issue on-site.
Especially during the high season, basic processes must function. Our impression, however, was that parts of the staff were not sufficiently trained or onboarded.
## Beach and beach bar – for us one of the biggest letdowns
A wide private sandy beach is advertised in the hotel description.
On-site, however, we found the hotel beach to be cramped, densely packed with lounge chairs, and poorly maintained.
The lounge chairs were placed close together under large sun sails. Instead of a spacious beach atmosphere, we felt more like it was an intensive use of space.
We found trash in the sand, and individual areas made a worn-out impression.
The beach bar seemed like it was from the 1990s to us. Equipment, design, and atmosphere had little to do with the standards of a modern 5-star resort in our opinion.
The sanitary facilities were also simple and not very inviting.
### Beach pavilions – not bookable, but the tour guide claims the opposite
The situation with the beach pavilions was particularly incomprehensible.
These were out of service during our stay and partially visibly rusty or worn out.
Upon our explicit inquiry, the tour guide explained to us that the pavilions could be booked at any time.
The hotel's guest relations, on the other hand, explicitly informed us that booking was not possible.
This gave us two completely contradictory pieces of information about the same facility.
The area around the bus stop near the beach also looked unkempt and not very inviting with its construction-ruin-like areas and trash containers.
For us, the beach was overall one of the biggest disappointments. Anyone looking forward to a well-maintained, spacious hotel beach should lower their expectations significantly.
## Pools – decent water quality, but inflexible organization
We would like to highlight the water quality of the pools positively. The water made a clean and well-maintained impression during our stay.
The outdoor pools were rather cool due to the time of year, which is fundamentally understandable.
We found the delayed opening of the indoor pool less understandable, even though several rainy days had been announced about a week earlier.
Especially in bad weather, a family hotel should have sufficient alternatives ready.
## Spa – loveless and hardly any wellness atmosphere
The spa area also disappointed us.
The design was, for our taste, plain, loveless, and not very inviting. We also missed a pleasant selection of drinks.
A relaxed wellness atmosphere, as we know it from other hotels in this category, did not arise for us.
## Fitness center – solid selection of equipment, but poor maintenance
The fitness center is spacious and basically offers a solid basic setup.
However, at least two pieces of equipment were not functional during our stay.
A foot strap on the rowing machine was torn, so that a secure fixation of the foot was no longer guaranteed. The butterfly machine was also defective.
The general design and maintenance seemed uninviting. Overall, we got the impression that while the gym exists, it is not a particular focus in terms of maintenance and supervision.
We have documented the defects photographically.
## Miniclub and leisure activities – modern rooms, but a not very family-friendly concept
Visually, the miniclub is one of the better facilities at the hotel. The rooms are modernly designed and basically offer nice play opportunities.
However, the usage options are significantly restricted.
A separate leisure area with billiards, table tennis, and a game console is intended only for older children. Smaller children are not allowed to use it, even when accompanied by their parents.
A classic outdoor playground is missing within the hotel grounds. The existing fun park by the pool looked unkempt, and the former lawn area was largely worn out.
We missed having sufficient, permanently accessible play and leisure facilities for smaller children.
Especially in bad weather, it became clear to us how limited the actual offering was.
### Incorrect miniclub opening hours in several places
The incorrectly advertised opening hours of the miniclub were particularly annoying.
These were communicated in several places throughout the hotel grounds, including in elevators and hotel buses. The note about the Sunday closure was missing.
When we wanted to visit the miniclub with our three-year-old son on a rainy day, we therefore stood in front of locked doors.
Guest services confirmed the incorrect information to us.
In their later statement, however, the hotel pointed out that a correct notice had been posted directly at the miniclub.
We find this explanation to be not very convincing.
Guests must be able to rely on the information that a hotel itself publishes in several places. It cannot be the responsibility of vacationers to compare all notices with each other.
## Guest relations and complaints – often justifications instead of solutions
The way our complaints were handled was particularly disappointing for us.
Regarding our criticism of the limited offerings, guest relations explained to us, in essence, that it is part of the hotel's concept not to offer certain services and options.
Of course, every hotel can pursue its own concept. But then this should be communicated transparently so that families know which offers are actually available before booking.
Especially with a 5-star family hotel, we expect more than modernly designed facilities that can only be used to a limited extent.
The subsequent handling of our complaints did not convince us either.
In the process, we got the impression that the hotel's statements were given more weight than our documented experiences.
From our perspective, contradictory information was frequently explained away or downplayed instead of addressing the actual problems from the guest's point of view.
Mistakes can happen anywhere. What is decisive, however, is how professionally and customer-oriented they are subsequently handled.
This is precisely where our expectations were clearly disappointed.
## Overall conclusion – not worth five stars for us
The Arcanus Hotels Trendline Side offers a modern hotel complex, an appealing pool area, and a visually well-equipped kids' club.
But what is the use of modern facilities if basic things do not function reliably?
An inadequately cleaned room, poor sleeping comfort, monotonous gastronomy, a practically meaningless children's buffet, dirty restaurant items, disappointing drinks, defective fitness equipment, an unkempt beach, and repeatedly contradictory information significantly impaired our vacation.
We found it particularly disappointing that numerous problems were not limited to a single area, but ran like a common thread through our stay.
The documented lack of cleanliness and the way our complaints were handled weigh particularly heavily for us.
**Our conclusion:** **A modern facade and five stars are not enough when cleanliness, quality, organization, and reliable service are lacking.**
For us, the price-performance ratio was not right. We have experienced a significantly better standard in other hotels in Turkey.
**We would not book the Arcanus Hotels Trendline Side again and cannot recommend it, especially to families with small children.**
