"We recently stayed at the Columbus Hotel in Tenerife. The hotel has clearly invested a lot in improving the communal areas, particularly around the pool, which are modern and well presented. There is also a noticeable effort being made regarding sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint, which is good to see.
We didn’t eat in the hotel itself, but there is a small independent café located in the corner of the complex which was excellent. It’s reasonably priced and perfect if you just want something simple like a pizza, toastie or cheesy chips without paying hotel restaurant prices.
Unfortunately, there were several downsides to our stay. The biggest issue was noise from the cleaning staff. If you have a room overlooking the pool area, be prepared to be woken early every morning. Instead of lifting the plastic chairs while cleaning, they are dragged across the ground, creating a lot of noise. This is then accompanied by the usual loud conversations between staff. I appreciate that lively conversation is common in Spain, but when it wakes you up every morning it does become frustrating. Just when you think it’s finished outside, the cleaning moves into the corridors and the noise starts again.
On the subject of cleaning, the room service was very basic. Beds were made and towels changed, but that was about it. We had to specifically request the floor to be mopped and even then I’m not convinced it was actually done – our socks were black within minutes, which tells its own story.
At the beginning of the week the guests seemed to be mostly older couples, but as the week went on the atmosphere changed significantly. It became very much like a Club 18–30 style environment, with very loud and rowdy behaviour, particularly in the early hours when people were returning from nights out.
On the positive side, the location of the hotel is excellent and very convenient for bars, restaurants and the beach. However, if you are looking for peace, relaxation or a quiet break, this probably isn’t the place for you. I dread to think what it would be like in peak season.
The hotel advertises that stag and hen parties are not allowed, although based on the general atmosphere it’s difficult to see how it could be much worse if they were.
Unfortunately, the travel experience also left a lot to be desired. There were significant delays on our outbound journey, which didn’t get the holiday off to the best start.
Leaving the island wasn’t much better. Tenerife Airport was chaotic, with long delays and generally rude and unfriendly staff which made the departure process unpleasant.
To top it all off, our Jet2 return flight had to divert to Santiago due to a medical emergency, which resulted in a delay of over five hours while a replacement flight crew had to be flown in from Manchester after the original crew exceeded their permitted flying hours.
We’ve visited Tenerife many times over the years, but sadly this trip has probably convinced us that it will be our last. The general experience, both at the hotel and more widely, has left us feeling that the Canary Islands have lost a lot of the charm they once had."
