"Our honest review of Sunwing after 9 nights
We stayed at Sunwing for 9 nights on a B&B basis and, overall, we had a lovely holiday. There are definitely a few things that could be improved, but there were also lots of positives.
Location & Rooms
The location is great, with supermarkets, restaurants and the beach all within easy reach, and we really enjoyed getting out and about and exploring the area.
Our room was lovely — clean, spacious and a great size for the four of us. The only thing we found lacking in the kitchen area was a cloth or sponge for cleaning, so we ended up buying our own. There was also nothing provided for drying pots, which would have been useful.
The maids were all really friendly and always pleasant.
Pool Area
The pool area was extremely busy during our stay. Unfortunately, we weren’t really able to swim in the main pool as there were lots of people standing around, moving through the water, playing the odd ball game and using plenty of inflatables. That said, we were still absolutely fine with it and the kids had a great time.
You can reserve your sun loungers, but you have to stay with your belongings until 9.30am. Unless you specifically want the front-row loungers, though, we actually found there was no real need to reserve them as there always seemed to be beds available. We went down around 8.30am and enjoyed the shaded area for an hour or so before heading off for breakfast, which worked perfectly for us.
One thing that could definitely have been better was clearing the drinks trays around the pool. They were often left sitting around for quite a while and could have been collected much more regularly.
The pool toilets, however, were a real let-down. They were honestly quite disgusting, and the smell was awful. We ended up going back to our room during the day or using the toilets inside the main hotel because of this. We never once saw them being cleaned during the day, which was really disappointing, especially considering how busy the pool area was.
Breakfast
Breakfast was okay — your usual average hotel breakfast. There was a good selection of the standard breakfast options and the fresh baguettes each morning were lovely.
Personally, I felt there could have been a better selection of fruit. An actual fresh fruit salad, for example, would have been a nice addition. There was, however, a good choice of milk alternatives, which was appreciated.
We did have to ask a few times for English tea bags, though!
Lollo & Bernie making an appearance at breakfast was a huge hit with our two. They absolutely loved it, and I thought it was a lovely touch.
Entertainment
I have to say, I’m actually a little baffled by some of the comments about there not being enough entertainment. For us, the daytime entertainment around the pool was a perfect balance.
There was water polo most days, different water games, aqua aerobics (which was very popular), pool discos in the smaller pool and Lollo & Bernie dancing. There’s also a kids’ club, teenager club with PlayStations, table tennis, chess and more.
The evening entertainment is your typical hotel entertainment, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. You can get involved, sing along and enjoy it for what it is, or simply head back to your balcony and play games as a family.
It’s never going to be hugely busy when the majority of guests aren’t All Inclusive, as people naturally head out for the evening, so I think it’s unfair to expect a packed entertainment area every night.
Staff
Overall, the majority of the staff were friendly and helpful, and some were particularly lovely with the children.
There were, unfortunately, a few who came across as quite rude and as though they really didn’t want to help, but thankfully these were the minority.
Check-Out Day
This was probably the biggest disappointment for us and, unfortunately, really put a dampener on what had otherwise been a great holiday.
Our flight was in the evening and we weren’t being collected until around 6pm. We had actually asked about paying to keep a room a few days before check-out, but unfortunately this wasn’t possible.
This meant checking out at 12pm and leaving our luggage in the luggage room, before having to spend around 6 hours without a room, with two young children.
We weren’t even asking to keep our actual room — just to have access to another room for a few hours so we had somewhere to relax, keep our belongings and get the children ready for a long evening of travelling.
Instead, we had to use the courtesy showers by the gym. These are also used by people coming in from the pool, so the floors were wet and dirty, and there was nowhere to really put your belongings.
I found this particularly disappointing. Six hours is a long time with young children, especially when you have to carry your valuables around with you while using the pool or going out locally. I also felt there was very little understanding from the reception staff about the fact we had two young children who needed somewhere to get changed and ready for travelling.
It was a really disappointing end to an otherwise lovely holiday.
If I were to book again, I would definitely make sure we had a morning or early afternoon flight so we weren’t left in the same situation.
Overall
Despite the negatives, we genuinely did have a lovely holiday. The rooms are fantastic for families, the location is great and we really enjoyed being able to venture out and explore.
There are definitely a few areas where I think the hotel could improve, particularly the pool toilets, cleanliness around the pool and the arrangements for late check-outs.
Would I stay again? Probably yes. There are a few things I’d like to see improved, but overall we enjoyed our stay and the positives definitely outweighed the negatives."
