"We stayed at Meliá Cala Galdana largely because of its exceptional location overlooking one of Menorca’s most beautiful beaches. The setting really is stunning, with spectacular views, beautiful coastline and easy access to Cala Galdana itself. It is the kind of location that makes you excited about your holiday before you have even arrived.
Unfortunately, while the location is five-star, our overall experience fell considerably short of what we expected from a five-star property.
From the moment we arrived, the experience felt surprisingly impersonal. We arrived early and completely understood that our room might not yet be ready. We were told that we would be contacted once it was available, so that naturally created an expectation that we would receive a call or message when we could check in. When we heard nothing, we eventually had to return to reception ourselves. Having to go back to reception in itself would not have been an issue; it was the fact that we had specifically been told we would be contacted and that expectation was not met. When we finally checked in, we were handed our room key with very little explanation or warmth. There was no real sense of being welcomed or made to feel like valued guests, which was disappointing for a hotel of this standard.
This feeling continued throughout our stay. We encountered several staff members who came across as rude, dismissive or simply uninterested, while genuinely warm and welcoming interactions were surprisingly rare. At times, asking for assistance felt more like an inconvenience than a normal part of being a hotel guest.
The evening entertainment was probably where this was most noticeable. Trying to order a drink could be surprisingly difficult, and on occasion we waited around 30 minutes for drinks to arrive. What made this particularly frustrating was seeing staff standing around talking or using their phones while guests were waiting. On one occasion in the lobby bar, we actually had to wait for a barman to finish texting before he would take our order. Whether or not the phone use was work-related, from a guest’s perspective it looked unprofessional and made the lack of attention even more frustrating.
It wasn’t just one bad interaction either. Throughout the stay, attentive and genuinely welcoming service felt inconsistent.
Breakfast was another area where we felt the hotel fell well short of what we would expect from a five-star property. The whole experience often felt rushed and impersonal. Tables appeared to receive little more than a quick brush between guests rather than being properly cleaned and reset, giving the impression of a busy operation focused on turning tables rather than creating a relaxed start to the day.
The buffet itself was inconsistent, with some dishes disappointing in quality or being served cold, and having to queue for breakfast every morning became tiresome. We were also surprised by the condition of some of the plates. On numerous occasions, a large proportion of the plates available at the buffet appeared to be dirty or inadequately cleaned, meaning we had to actively search through the stack to find one that was actually clean. Having to inspect plates before using them is not something we would expect at a five-star hotel.
Then there were the flies. There were a surprising number of them around the breakfast buffet, and we actually saw flies crawling directly over food. That was extremely unpleasant and raised obvious concerns about food hygiene. We also noticed flies in other areas of the hotel, so this did not feel like an isolated breakfast issue. Given how frequently we encountered them, we were surprised that there did not appear to be more effective measures in place.
The Italian restaurant was more positive in terms of the food itself. The dishes we had were good, but once again the service lacked warmth and attentiveness, which unfortunately took away from what could otherwise have been a very enjoyable meal.
Our room was attractive and generally pleasant, but there were several issues that again made us question the five-star standard.
The bathroom door repeatedly jammed shut and, on several occasions, we had to use our full body weight to open it. This was clearly a maintenance issue that should have been identified and fixed.
The minibar was another example of something that felt poorly thought through. The snacks and drinks were all chargeable, and there was so much paid-for stock that it took up a significant amount of the available refrigerator and storage space. As the hotel accommodates B&B guests, we felt there should have been more usable space for guests to store their own food and drinks.
Bottled water was also only replaced occasionally. In a warm climate, we consider drinking water a basic guest amenity, so this was disappointing.
There were some nice touches. The Rituals toiletries were good and felt appropriate for the standard the hotel advertises, but unfortunately some of the more basic amenities and maintenance did not seem to receive the same level of attention.
The evening atmosphere was also somewhat disappointing. The entertainment finished at 10pm, which felt surprisingly early for a holiday resort, and guests were encouraged to leave the area shortly afterwards. Rather than allowing people to continue enjoying the evening, there seemed to be quite a strong emphasis on closing things down. At times, it genuinely felt as though we were being given a bedtime rather than encouraged to relax and enjoy the hotel.
The hotel itself was generally quiet, which we appreciated, although on some evenings there was considerable noise from surrounding hotels, with loud music continuing late into the night. We appreciate that this isn’t entirely within Meliá’s control, but it did affect our ability to enjoy a peaceful evening and, at times, get a good night’s sleep.
During the day, we also felt there were missed opportunities around the pool and communal areas. Some gentle background music could have created a much more relaxed holiday atmosphere. Instead, these areas sometimes felt rather flat and lacking in atmosphere. That said, the pool area itself was generally pleasant, and we were pleased not to experience the usual sunbed battles that can be such a feature of resort hotels.
We also liked the hotel’s no-smoking policy, although unfortunately it did not appear to be consistently enforced. We saw people smoking close to the children’s pool, meaning families had to move away rather than staff stepping in. Guests shouldn’t have to manage this themselves, particularly around family-friendly areas. If smoking is prohibited, we would expect the policy to be actively enforced.
Even small things began to add to the overall impression. On a few occasions there was no hand soap available in the public toilets. On its own, that would be a minor issue, but when combined with the other problems we experienced, it contributed to a feeling of inconsistent attention to detail.
The same was true when we left. Checkout was very short and impersonal, with little interaction beyond completing the formalities. We had some time to wait before our transfer, but there was no offer to store our luggage or any proactive assistance with making the wait more comfortable. Again, this is a small thing, but after a stay where we had already felt that guest care was lacking, it was disappointing not to have even that basic level of consideration at the end of our holiday.
Perhaps the biggest frustration is that the hotel has so much going for it. Cala Galdana is beautiful, the views are exceptional and the surrounding coastline is genuinely spectacular. The location is ideal for walking, swimming and kayaking, and we particularly recommend kayaking if you have the opportunity.
We were also genuinely surprised by how many guests told us they return to Meliá Cala Galdana. Obviously, everyone experiences a hotel differently, and perhaps some guests have had a very different experience to ours. It did make us wonder whether guests staying in The Level receive a noticeably different standard of service. We understand that premium guests receive additional benefits, but regardless of room category, we believe every guest should receive basic courtesy, respect and attentiveness.
Ultimately, the location is what makes this hotel so appealing, and it is easy to see why people choose to stay here. The setting is genuinely special and the hotel has many of the ingredients needed to provide an exceptional holiday.
That is also why we found our experience particularly disappointing.
The hotel commands a five-star price and creates expectations accordingly. When paying a premium price, we expect the basics — attentive service, clean and well-maintained facilities, good-quality food, reliable amenities and attention to detail — to be consistently delivered.
For us, too many of those basics were missing.
Individually, some of the issues we experienced might seem relatively minor. A delayed drink, a dirty plate, a missing bottle of water, a lack of soap or an impersonal checkout might not normally ruin a holiday. But when these things keep happening throughout a stay, they start to create an overall impression, and unfortunately that was our experience at Meliá Cala Galdana.
We left feeling that the quality of the hotel experience simply did not match the quality of its surroundings.
The setting may be five-star, but for us, the overall experience fell considerably short of the five-star standard we expected and felt we had paid for. Based on our experience, we would not return."
