"My family and I recently spent a week at Ponient Marinada, Salou (26/09/26 - 03/10/26), and before arriving I'd read plenty of reviews on TripAdvisor. Honestly, after reading some of them I was expecting the worst, but I'm happy to say that many of those reviews felt overly harsh. Overall, we had a really enjoyable holiday and would happily return if the right deal came up.
We travelled as a family of three, including our energetic 6-year-old son, and found the hotel to be a great base for our holiday.
Location, Location, Location
The hotel's location is a real winner. It's situated at the quieter end of the main strip, with plenty of shops, bars, and restaurants within easy walking distance. Follow the strip and you'll find yourself at the beach, making for a lovely stroll, especially in the evening.
On a side note we managed to book a late check out for only 35 euros, they also have luggage lockers which I though was good value for money if your hanging around all day. Prices in my pictures.
The Room
Our room was clean, comfortable, and surprisingly spacious. I was quite puzzled by some reviews describing the rooms as tiny because for the three of us, it was absolutely fine. Let's be honest, you don't fly to Spain to sit in your hotel room all day.
The bathroom was modern, spacious, and one of the nicest parts of the room.
A few small improvements wouldn't go amiss:
An extra chair on the balcony (two chairs for three people seemed a little odd!)
A few additional plug sockets
Better sound insulation
The walls do seem quite thin, and you can hear doors, wardrobes, and general hotel life around you. Most of this wasn't a huge issue, although explaining some of the interesting sounds coming from the room next door to a curious 6-year-old led to some creative parenting. Let's just say we told him they were "having a wrestling match" and leave it at that!
The bed was also incredibly firm. We managed just fine, but it was probably the hardest mattress I've ever slept on. On the plus side, we requested extra pillows and they were delivered promptly with no fuss.
My biggest gripe was actually the balcony. Even during the dry days, there was a constant drip from above hitting the metal handrail, creating a surprisingly loud tapping noise. Once the heavy rain arrived during the last few days, it became even more noticeable. My temporary engineering solution of lining the handrail with towels worked perfectly, and the housekeeping team seemed to appreciate the idea as they kindly left them in place and even replaced them with dry ones one day!
Pool Area
The pool area was generally good, with plenty of sunbeds available throughout our stay. We never had to join the early morning towel Olympics to secure a lounger.
The splash park was a big hit with the kids, although both the pool area and splash zone could benefit from a bit of TLC. Some areas looked like they needed a deep clean, and by late afternoon there could be cups and rubbish lying around.
To be fair, most of the blame lies with some guests rather than the hotel. There were bins everywhere and cup return points available, but not everyone seemed interested in using them.
Food & Drinks
Food is one of those subjects where everyone has an opinion, and judging by some reviews you'd think culinary disaster awaited around every corner.
That definitely wasn't our experience.
The food was generally good with plenty of variety throughout the week. Like every all-inclusive hotel I've ever visited, some meals were better than others, but we always found something we enjoyed.
The themed nights confused us slightly as the themes didn't always seem to match what was being served, but that wasn't exactly a holiday-ruining issue!
In fact, during our seven-night stay, we only chose to eat out once, simply because we fancied a change. Not because there was anything wrong with the food.
The snack bar deserves a special mention. It became something of a second home for our son, who happily lived on snacks, fruit, and quick bites for most of the week.
One observation though, and this is directed entirely at fellow holidaymakers rather than the hotel: the amount of food waste, queue-jumping, and people handling food with their bare hands was genuinely shocking. It reminded me why all-inclusive holidays can sometimes be a test of patience!
The Staff
The staff were one of the highlights of the hotel.
Everyone was friendly, hardworking, and helpful throughout our stay. Special mention goes to Angel behind the bar, who was fantastic with our son and always had a smile on his face.
The restaurant staff worked incredibly hard and were always pleasant, while reception staff were helpful despite dealing with large check-in numbers.
There was one younger bar staff member who seemed slightly less enthusiastic than the rest, but nobody can be having a great day every day, so we'll let that one slide!
Useful Tip for Families
If you're travelling with children and need access to laundry facilities, there is a laundry room in the apartments across the road. Reception will provide a key between 9am and 5pm.
The cost was very reasonable:
€4 for a wash
€1 per 15 minutes in the dryer
There is only one washer and one dryer, but it was incredibly useful during a family holiday.
Hotel Facilities
The indoor common areas were spotless. There always seemed to be someone cleaning and keeping everything looking presentable.
The lifts were a little small and occasionally slow, particularly around meal times, but they worked perfectly throughout our stay.
PortAventura & Ferrari Land
One of the biggest bonuses was that our package included passes to PortAventura World and Ferrari Land.
We absolutely loved both parks and had an amazing time. The only thing that stopped us going back again was the torrential rain during the final few days of the holiday.
We would have liked to see more organised excursions available through TUI or the hotel, as we weren't particularly keen on booking trips through the various sellers along the strip.
Entertainment & Kids Club
Since we booked through TUI, our son had access to the kids club and absolutely loved it. He attended twice a day and was always excited to go back.
The TUI reps were fantastic with the children and were always available to answer questions or help out.
One area where the hotel could improve is indoor entertainment for bad weather days. A small arcade, pool table, or upgraded play area would make a huge difference. We had three days of awful rain, and a lot of parents were desperately trying to entertain bored children.
One Final Funny Moment...
My 6-year-old somehow managed to get told off for playing with a small inflatable ball in an almost empty swimming pool. To this day he's still convinced this was the greatest injustice of his entire holiday!
Final Verdict
Ponient Marinada isn't a luxury five-star resort, and it certainly isn't perfect. However, it offers good value for money, a fantastic location, friendly staff, decent food, and great family facilities.
Did it have a few flaws? Absolutely.
Did those flaws ruin our holiday? Not even close.
We had a great week, made some fantastic memories, and would happily stay here again in the future.
