"This was our third visit to Funchal and our second stay in a Pestana hotel. We chose the CR7 as its close to the centre and we knew from experience that this would be advantageous after previously staying further out. The hotel is literally a 5 minute walk to the shops, bars, restaurants etc so this was great!
Okay, onto the hotel itself. Check in was smooth and friendly and felt quite informal with just a small desk inside the door to the main bar/restaurant. This is where breakfast is served which was fine, but there’s nowhere to sit and just relax which was a big negative for me. All of the rooms are off a long corridor on the first floor - we had two superior rooms which overlook the harbour. The hotel claims to be a lifestyle hotel which conjures up the idea of luxury but I’d say the rooms were pretty standard and for the price I was probably expecting a bit more. Definitely not a luxury feel. Rooms were cleaned quite late in the day which was annoying when we returned late afternoon wanting to relax but unable to do so. This really highlighted the overall lack of other spaces where you could just sit in comfort, read a book or whatever.
The only seating specifically for guests was around the pool which was loungers or tables and chairs near the bar. These had no parasols so it was impossible to sit there during the day in the sun.
For me, everything felt very hard edged and style over substance (when I say style, I mean CR7 themed).
I think some touches were missing. For example, our tea and coffee supplies were never replenished.
Breakfast was okay. There was a fairly good choice but little variety from day to day so that by the time we left, it all felt a bit boring. We didn’t eat in the restaurant on an evening as it always seemed to be pretty empty with diners (though some people having drinks).
All in all, apart from the location, I wasn’t really impressed and came home feeling that I’d have liked more opportunities to relax."
