Cornaro Hotel

"We stayed for 10 nights at the Cornaro in September/October. Split is good for links to a variety of other places (eg the islands) but not an ideal resort itself (too crowded and twice as expensive as, for example, Omis). Ferry trips to Trogir and Stari Grad were excellent as were two bus trips to Omis (5 euros pp each way on the number 60). The hotel is in a good location, just outside the palace walls. The Cornaro building is an ex Soviet era hospital, with public areas and the rooms reworked and decorated to a high standard. Due to its history there are no balconies and the windows are generally small - we had two 400mm square windows, high up with only a view of some roof tiles. Our room was therefore not suitable for relaxing in and the roof terrace closed at 10pm with no drinking up time, gustes being thrown out at 10, so early nights. The pool was empty for maintenance. Breakfasts were good but we didn't have any evening meals there. Staff were extremely helpful and pleasant. One thing to beware of is that the hotel, in addition to the expected tourist tax of 48 euros, makes a charge for "insurance" (33 euros) and "registration" (1.70) This is kept quiet at checkout with only tourist tax being mentioned, and is on top of the already high room rates - the invoice was hurriedly put into a sealed envelope by the receptionist. The legal basis is the Hospitality Industry Act, Article 10, Obligations of Caterers, paragraph 9: "to insure guests in the catering facility for accommodation against the consequences of an accident". In my opinion third party insurance is normally paid by businesses and rolled into their charging structure, not charged as a hidden extra charge on leaving, and is profiteering. No other business that we dealt with made additional charges."

"This is an excellent hotel for a couple's city break. The location in the centre of the Old Town means you are close to all the key historical locations and walking tours. The seafront is a short walk away and the pick up for the day trip to Krka Waterfalls at the National Park was also very close. The hotel itself is really stunning, and very well maintained. The breakfast options and service were excellent. I did not catch the blonde lady's name who served us most days but she was excellent. You also can eat outside in a beautiful location. The (Superior) room was cleaned daily and was in a good condition. The roof bar is also excellent and gives an amazing view over the city. The food and drink is quite expensive but with a great service and good quality. Vegetarian options are available. Reception are really helpful if you need towels to take with you if you are planning to go swimming on a day trip. The only minor feedback we have is as follows: We arrived too early to check in so spent a couple of hours having food and drink on the roof bar. We expected our luggage to be available in the room once we checked in however it still then took some time to arrive. The air con controls in the room were extremely bright. We could not find a way to dim them. As they directly faced the bed this kept me awake a couple of times at night. Getting more cream / milk for tea or coffee in the room did prove rather challenging when calling reception as they did not appear to understand what I was asking for, neither did the housekeeping when they asked if we needed anything. I don't understand why it was not restocked in the mini bar daily as per other hotels. People with nut allergies need to be aware: the complimentary Bajadera chocolates are hazelnut and almond so I could not have them (although I understand they are a famous Croatian confectionary and my husband enjoyed them.) Also with the roof bar complimentary snacks - some of the bowls of crisps / rice cake type snacks had peanuts hiding at the bottom which meant I could not have them. However, this is intended as feedback and in no way spoiled our enjoyment of the hotel and our holiday itself. We would recommend this hotel to other couples for a city break."

"Just had a weeks holiday at this lovely Central Hotel, situated as my mobility needing a walking stick was easy to get about. Nice room, all the staff friendly and attentive with a special thanks to Jadranka for her help and advice at breakfast restaurant. Great hotel in a lovely city."
