"We were returning guests, having stayed at the hotel at exactly the same time last year, so we were really looking forward to our visit.
First and foremost, the hotel's greatest asset is undoubtedly its staff. Every member of the team we encountered was wonderfully attentive, polite and professional. They are a real credit to the hotel and the wider hotel chain. The hotel manager was equally excellent, and we cannot praise the team highly enough.
However, we noticed several changes since our previous stay which, unfortunately, detracted from the overall experience.
Breakfast: Previously, freshly made omelettes were available on request, but this is no longer the case. While scrambled eggs are still available on the buffet, having an omelette freshly prepared was a lovely touch that we missed. Similarly, the filter coffee previously offered at breakfast has disappeared. Although there is still a coffee machine, the filter coffee was a nice extra that we particularly enjoyed. These may seem like minor details, but it's often the little touches that make a hotel stay feel special.
Evening Dining: Perhaps the most disappointing change was the lack of an evening restaurant service. The hotel now operates primarily on a bed-and-breakfast basis, and although half-board can still be booked, evening meals are provided off-site.
Unfortunately, the weather was particularly bad when we arrived, with much of the hotel understandably closed up against the elements. We really didn't want to venture far in such conditions, yet finding somewhere to have an evening meal proved incredibly difficult.
Last year, the hotel's restaurant was open in the evenings, which was both convenient and enjoyable. This year, however, that option was no longer available. When we enquired about room service, we were told it wasn't offered at weekends. This was particularly frustrating given that the restaurant had been opened to accommodate a group of Italian and Far Eastern guests. It was disappointing that other residents were unable to benefit from an evening meal on-site, particularly in such poor weather.
Evening Atmosphere: The restaurant closure has also had a noticeable knock-on effect on the hotel bar. Last year, the bar had a lovely, lively atmosphere in the evenings, with guests leaving the restaurant and enjoying a few more drinks before retiring for the night. This year, it was almost completely deserted. The difference in atmosphere was quite striking, and sadly, the hotel seemed to have lost much of the evening buzz that we had enjoyed so much on our previous visit.
Bathroom: One other issue worth mentioning was the shower over the bath. We found that after showering in the evening, soap residue was not draining away properly, leaving the bath surface extremely slippery the following morning. With no non-slip mat or grips in place, this felt like a potential safety hazard and something that really ought to be addressed.
Overall: Despite these disappointments, we want to reiterate just how wonderful the staff and hotel manager were throughout our stay. Their warmth, attentiveness and professionalism remain the hotel's standout feature.
It's simply a shame that some of the changes made since last year have taken away from what was previously such an enjoyable experience. We returned because we had loved our previous stay, but this time the hotel felt noticeably different, particularly in the evenings.
We sincerely hope that some of these little touches and, more importantly, the evening dining options might be reconsidered, as they made such a positive difference to the overall guest experience."
