"We stayed at Vibe Nazionale in Rome as a family of four, including our two children aged 20 and 22 and my 84-year-old mother, who uses a mobility scooter.
Before our stay, I specifically contacted the hotel to check that there was a lift and that they could accommodate my mum. We weren’t necessarily looking for a fully accessible room, but I wanted to make sure she would be able to get in and out of the hotel and access the room safely.
Unfortunately, this was where we found the hotel quite disappointing.
On arrival, there was a step immediately into the hotel, followed by another step before reaching the lift. The lift itself was extremely small and could barely accommodate two people. My mum’s mobility scooter couldn’t fit inside, so we had to leave it downstairs for the duration of our stay. This was particularly frustrating as I had contacted the hotel beforehand specifically to check the arrangements.
We arrived around 1pm after travelling from England. Our room wasn’t ready, and there was very little in the way of facilities while we waited. The breakfast/café area was closed, there was nowhere to get a drink and no water was offered. We ended up having to change in the breakfast area, with our suitcases around us, as the available toilet was very small.
Once we checked in, the room itself was a reasonable size for four people, with a double bed and two single sofa beds. However, the main bed was incredibly hard – the mattress felt like sleeping on a rock. The pillows were fine, but the bed definitely wasn’t comfortable for us.
The bathroom also had a large step up from the bedroom, with a hard concrete floor. This made access particularly difficult for my mum, especially during the night when she needed to use the bathroom.
Breakfast was quite disappointing too. There was a selection of cold meats, eggs and a few other basic items, but there was no proper hot breakfast, and overall the choice was quite limited.
The hotel does have a lovely old-fashioned character and its location is definitely a positive. It’s very central, with the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps around a ten-minute walk away, making it a convenient base for exploring Rome.
Overall, though, we found the amenities and accessibility disappointing, particularly given that we had contacted the hotel in advance about my mum’s mobility. The location is excellent, but for us, the lack of suitable access, the tiny lift, limited facilities and uncomfortable bed meant it wasn’t somewhere we would choose to stay again."
