"I’ve just returned from a cheeky week long holiday with my 14 year old son, staying at the lovely Athinoula Hotel in Kefalos. I booked with ‘Love Holidays’ and understanding that it was rated 2 stars, I really wasn’t expecting much. We arrived close to midnight to the owner and her husband waiting for us. She was very friendly and welcomed us warmly to the hotel. The reception are was inside a large bar area (obviously this didn’t stay open at night as there were no other guests in sight). Once checked in we were given our key and directed to our room. Rooms at Athinoula are basic, no doubt about it, and small so if you want room to manoeuvre freely then maybe think again. Having said that, they were completely adequate for our needs. We had two single beds, side by side, bedside tables and a dressing table with stool and mirror. I never brought the stool out as there wasn’t really room but sat on the bed to do my hair and make up. There was a large wardrobe with hangers in for our clothes and a safe which we didn’t use as the maids were well respected and trusted by previous guests according to reviews I’d read, however there if you need it. The bathroom was small but had everything we needed. My only gripe was the shower curtain which stuck to me and made it difficult to shower at times. There was great water pressure, hot water at all times and basic soap and shampoo provided to get you through a few days. The rooms were cleaned daily and fresh towels provided. There was also a small balcony overlooking the pool, with fab views of the sea and this was swept daily also. The pool was lovely and refreshing and always looked clean. About 40 sunbeds, quite uncomfortable for me with my aches and pains, but perfectly satisfactory for anyone else and there was never a struggle to get one. A couple of people put towels down but you could arrive at any point in the day and there would be plenty to choose from. There was a snack bar poolside which opened at 10 (in Greek time this was more like 11) where you could get tasty snacks, fab milkshake and a plethora of different drinks.
Was the hotel luxury, absolutely not but it was 2 star so what do you expect. My son said he felt I undersold it to him before we went and was pleasantly surprised. Would I go back, yes, yes and yes again. It was in a wonderful location with the sea just across a main road with all the restaurants and bars and supermarkets on. The owner Evi and family were wonderful hosts and not only the Athinoula but the whole area of Kefalos felt safe. For a week of relaxation it was perfect."
