"We had booked 3 nights (2 rooms on a B&B rate) here as a base to explore the local area. We’ve stayed in Nice previously but thought it would be different and more authentic to stay here.
This will be a mixed review of good elements and bad elements…it’s just unfortunate that we all left with a negative feeling but I’ll come to that later.
As Hhonors Diamond members they upgraded my mother’s room which was much appreciated. We were both in Junior suites (Chappell & Klein) and the rooms were lovely, quirky and characterful. Our bathroom had broken shower fixtures so the shower head wouldn’t stay in & upright, which we reported that night but the maintenance guy had left. This should have been remedied before our stay.
Unfortunately we had to move rooms the following morning as the room/area above us was very noisy with footfall traffic and was very intrusive.
The hotel moved us with minimal fuss, and the new room was much quieter.
We ate in the restaurant for our first evening having checked earlier in the day that they had vegetarian offerings (2 x veggies). They confirmed they did. However when we ordered a veggie main they said it would be ‘grilled vegetables’ which turned out to be 3 small pieces of artichoke, 2 baby spring onions and a butter foam. I honestly don’t know how the kitchen had the nerve to send this out as a ‘main’. We had already had the asparagus starter (3 pieces) and made that veggie by removing the trout roe, so not only had we had zero carbs or protein we were both still very hungry.
I explained to the Swedish waitress that this was unacceptable to serve, as my mother had the fish dish which was identical to ours with the addition of fish. She said she agreed and had already informed the chef. I requested the bill and there was nothing to reflect our discontent, we were charged in full (over 180 odd euro).
On checkout I spoke with the general manager, as we had had a few days to reflect on it and were not happy. She agreed it was unacceptable and told us their normal chef would be returning in a few days (not much use to us) and proceeded to go about her business. No goodwill gesture to resolve the situation and allow us to leave in a positive light, nothing.
Additionally they then proceeded to charge my card for 20 euro 2hrs after we had left as 2 people had a fruit plate at breakfast (but no hot food). I had been having a fruit plate instead of their hot plate offering every morning but today they decided to charge, and charge without authorization. I did email and this was subsequently refunded, but unnecessary and added to the existing negative feeling.
Their breakfast offering is very poor, and size wise their portion quite mean. You are delivered a bread/pastries basket to the table, which consists of cut up croissants, pain au chocolat and bread. I would rather be asked if we wanted pastries and be offered a full piece than pre cut up pastries. The same with the bread…delicious but the French stick was cut up so thin it was ridiculous. It felt very cost cutting. There are no cereals offered, only a choice of 1 small hot dish, effectively egg/bacon or granola. And if you want fruit you have to order a fruit plate at 10 euro (which consisted of a piece of mango, 2 pieces of kiwi and some grapes). We ended up buying our own fruits at the markets and taking them to breakfast ourselves. A hotel of this caliber should be offering all of this within its included price when you have paid for breakfast, allowing guests to choose. Similarly you are allowed 1 hot drink and then charged for any more. It just doesn’t feel luxurious at all.
So unfortunately that is the reason for the 2 star review. It doesn’t offer a full experience of a ‘Small Luxury Hotel’.
Positives
- the staff overall are very friendly and welcoming
- the setting of the hotel is beautiful
Negatives
- a very poor breakfast offering
- the restaurant dinner food is poor
- parking is very limited and is hit/miss whether you will get a spot when returning. The hotel will come and collect you from parking but we waited 45minutes one day
- no turndown service"
