"I stayed at the Murrayfield Hotel with my teenage daughter in Room 22, which was made up as a twin room, for a mother and daughter city break, travelling up from South-East England.
Overall, we had a really lovely stay. The room was quiet, comfortable and well equipped. It was a little smaller than I had expected from the photographs, but there was still enough space for the two of us and our suitcases. Our window overlooked a quieter side road rather than the main road at the front, and we weren't disturbed by any noise.
The room had everything we needed, including a fridge, dressing gowns, toiletries and tea and coffee facilities. The Tunnock's caramel bars were a particularly nice touch!
One area that really needs attention is the mirrors and lighting. There was no suitable mirror at a dressing table. The bathroom mirror wasn't particularly practical for doing hair or make-up, as the bathroom often became steamy or was occupied. The full-length mirror beside the wardrobe was also very dark, with inadequate lighting.
I've noticed that other guests have mentioned this issue in reviews in past years, so it's disappointing that it doesn't appear to have been addressed. It's such a simple improvement to make, but having a properly lit mirror and somewhere to sit and get ready would make a real difference, particularly for female guests.
The staff were helpful and friendly throughout our stay. There is no lift to the rooms, but staff were happy to assist with our luggage, which we appreciated. They also kindly stored our bags for us throughout the day when we checked out, which was extremely helpful.
Food was a little disappointing. We ordered room service, but there wasn't a menu in the room, so we had to use the hotel's website to look up the menu. Unfortunately, the online menu was out of date and some of the items we wanted were no longer available, such as the kids' macaroni cheese.
When our food arrived, the order wasn't quite right either. The kids' cheeseburger came without cheese, and the kids' flatbread was served with tzatziki instead of hummus. Unfortunately, the tzatziki wasn't to her taste (or mine). It was a shame, as she'd been looking forward to her meal.
Breakfast, however, was good. There was a good choice, including sourdough with eggs and avocado, a full Scottish breakfast or veggie alternative, pancakes and the usual continental options.
The location is excellent. It is out of the hustle and bustle. There are bus stops right outside the hotel, with convenient journeys of around 15 minutes into the city centre in one direction and to the airport in the other. It made getting around Edinburgh really easy.
Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay and found the hotel comfortable, quiet and convenient. The staff were helpful, and there were lots of thoughtful touches in the room.
I'd happily stay again. My main suggestions would be to improve the dressing and make-up facilities in room 22 and ensure the online food menu is kept up to date, or have menus in the rooms."
