"My stay at Hotel Luar was a complete surprise birthday gift from my children for my 50th birthday, and what a memorable surprise it turned out to be.
To be honest, when we first arrived at around 9:30–10:00pm, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. From the outside, and considering the way the hotel is positioned, I initially wondered whether I was going to enjoy the stay as much as I had hoped. The area was very quiet, and there was just one gentleman on reception when we arrived.
However, first impressions can be deceiving.
Check-in was smooth, quick and professional. Once we entered our room, I still had a few reservations, but the moment I opened the balcony doors everything changed. Standing there looking out towards the beach, with the beautiful sea view stretching before us, I realised we had found something special. We had a partial sea view, but it felt much more than that. The sight of the ocean every morning was absolutely wonderful.
As someone who drinks a lot of tea, I noticed there wasn't a kettle in the room. I went down to reception and spoke to the gentleman I had met earlier, who I later learned was called Miguel. He listened carefully, explained that one would be arranged the following morning, and true to his word, it was there exactly as promised. It's often the little things that make a difference, and Miguel's willingness to help immediately stood out.
The room itself was prepared beautifully for us, with the twin beds thoughtfully arranged into one larger bed. It was clean, comfortable and exactly what we needed for a relaxing few days away.
Breakfast each morning was a pleasure. Unfortunately, I didn't catch the name of the lady working there, but her smile could light up the entire restaurant. Every morning she greeted guests warmly, always smiling, always cheerful and always welcoming. She genuinely made breakfast feel like the best start to the day.
There was also a very tall young gentleman working around the bar and restaurant area who was equally impressive. Polite, friendly, professional and always smiling, he represented the hotel wonderfully.
We spent time in the swimming pool, which wasn't heated and certainly felt cold at first, but once we got in we had a fantastic time. In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we barely wanted to get out. Sometimes the best holiday moments are the simplest ones.
The location of Hotel Luar turned out to be one of its greatest strengths. Through the rear entrance, we discovered several excellent restaurants just a few minutes' walk away, including some fantastic Indian halal restaurants. Everything was incredibly convenient and easy to reach.
But the real highlight came when we explored the beach during the daytime.
Nothing could have prepared me for the breathtaking beauty of Praia da Rocha. The golden cliffs, dramatic rock formations and stunning coastline genuinely left me speechless. It was one of those rare moments where you stop walking, look around and simply admire what is in front of you. The beach is spectacular.
What also impressed me greatly was the atmosphere throughout the area. The people of Portugal, along with the holidaymakers we met, were polite, respectful and friendly. There was no noise, no unpleasant behaviour and no disruption. It felt peaceful, relaxed and welcoming everywhere we went.
Over our three-day stay, Miguel continued to be incredibly helpful. I am one of those guests who tends to ask a lot of questions while travelling, and I found myself visiting reception regularly. Every single time, Miguel was patient, professional and happy to help. His customer service deserves special recognition.
By the end of the trip, Hotel Luar had completely won me over. What began as a surprise birthday getaway became one of the most enjoyable short breaks I have had in years. The combination of the location, the incredible beach, the friendly staff, the traditionally designed comfortable rooms and the relaxed atmosphere made it a truly memorable experience.
If I ever return to Praia da Rocha, I honestly wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. Hotel Luar offers everything you need within walking distance, sits beside one of the most beautiful coastal walks imaginable, and is staffed by people who genuinely care about their guests.
Thank you to Miguel and the entire Hotel Luar team for helping make my surprise 50th birthday trip such a wonderful experience. It is a holiday and a hotel that I will remember very fondly for many years to come.
