City Hotel Matyas

"Stayed in the City hotel matyas for 5 days, hotel was clean and basic, was cleaned every day and fresh towels. Bed was to hard for me but wide for a single bed. Breakfast was very poor, I never been to a hotel with no toaster... no British teabags either.. There is alot of stairs and the lift is very small and old, the hotel is very old and needs updating. Its great as was in the central in Budapest so the best... staff were friendly and always there for help. I loved Budapest plenty to see and view.. I would go back to Budapest but not this hotel..."

"I booked with lastminute and was pleasantly surprised. I do not understand people moaning about the irony railings and old lift. It's authentic not some boring gutted building like everything else in the world. Please keep the soviet style lift my friend and I loved it. It's a part of history now. I found the hotel spotless and the room was huge. Fab location and really lovely staff. Aircon was a bonus, didn't expect that. We were there during the renovations and it was fine. Breakfast was average like anywhere else in the world, quit complaining there isn't almond milk, I wouldn't expect that."

"This is a charming, quirky hotel. Built in 1904, it was originally owned by a brewer then became a restaurant, now it is a hotel. Part of the hotel does not have a lift, so if you have mobility issues let them know in advance of your arrival. My room was not large but it was clean and warm with a shower in the bathroom. Free wi-fi and a flat screen television with English, German, French and Italian channels available. No kettle in the room, but there is a coffee machine at Reception and an excellent Starbucks nearby. I stayed 6 nights and was perfectly comfortable. Breakfast is worth adding to your booking - eggs and sausages, cereals, yoghurts, pastries, fresh fruit and veg, all delicious. If you arrive early enough there is a table with a beautiful view of the Castle Quarter across the Danube. Location - the hotel is one block away from the Danube. The Tram and Bus lines are a minute away, the docks for Danube cruises are 5 minutes' walk and the Airport bus and metro are also close. Get the Budapest Go app for tickets, unless you are over 65 - then you travel for free. You are virtually halfway along Vaci Utca, 10 minutes from the Central Market; within walking distance of most tourist sites. English is spoken at Reception - whenever I had a query, they could answer it. The hotel might be "simple" but it can't be beaten for location, value for money and a warm welcome!"
