"The good: the hotel is very close to the train station, so it's convenient to walk to. There are also trams that stop right outside the hotel's front door, so public transport inside the city is also easy. There's a beautiful garden nearby. There's a nice courtyard inside the hotel. Staff were friendly. There are a few vending machines. Coin-operated laundry machines are supposed to be available, though we never used them, and laundromats that take credit cards are a five-minute walk away. The wifi was reliable and up to the task of making video calls for our work.
The bad: We were promised air-conditioning. We did not get air-conditioning. We had a protracted stay of nearly a month, and we never got air-conditioning for a single minute of our stay. Daytime high temperatures ranged from the mid-80s Fahrenheit (or 30 degrees Celsius) to the mid-90s Fahrenheit (or 35 degrees Celsius). Nighttime temperatures were better, but not so much that our room ever really cooled off. It simply went from unbearable to uncomfortable. We kept the window open at night, shut the window and drew the curtains by day, and constantly used the single tabletop fan we were given.
The hotel posted signs in the elevator thanking everyone for their patience and blaming the non-functional AC on the heat wave. We were there a week or so before the heat wave officially began, and the AC was non-functional then too. We were told the AC would be fixed as soon as possible. That apparently did not mean "within the month," because we were there for nearly a month and the AC was never fixed.
In addition to the lack of AC, our first room's hair dryer and mini-fridge did not work. The bathroom smelled lightly of sewage, although the odor did fade after a couple of days. The curtain sagged in the middle where it had not been fastened to the curtain rod. After we complained three times, we were moved to a different room that had a functioning hair dryer and mini-fridge (and no sewer smell). We were also told the AC was working in this room, but it was not.
For two people, we were allotted a single bath towel and clean hand towel per week. We were told that an additional towel set (so we would have one towel per person per week) would cost an additional 8 euros. We opted instead to buy a second towel at a nearby store for 5 euros. Breakfast was available but cost 18 euros per person, so we breakfasted instead at local restaurants for about 7-9 euros per person.
The room was furnished adequately, but in an extremely basic way. There were scuffs on the walls, stains on the hallway carpet, and water stains on the ceiling tiles. The bathtub was new and attractive, but it was also incredibly slippery and without anything to grab onto. The bed was comfortable, though for some reason the pillows were the size of large throw pillows.
While the room was spartan, we would have been fine there if the advertised appliances had worked. But the AC did not work. When we tried to work in the room, our laptops heated the space further -- and it was in the mid-80s or mid-90s before we turned our laptops on. We tried to keep cool with cold showers and drinks with ice, but it's hard to cool yourself with water while at the same time working with electronics.
I would not stay here again, at least in the summer, for any price."
