A Pleasant Surprise in the Heart of Paris
"Paris is a city that rewards those who choose their neighbourhood wisely. Stay too far from the centre and valuable sightseeing time disappears on public transport; stay too close to the major landmarks and hotel prices can quickly become eye-watering. The 9th arrondissement strikes an excellent balance. Home to elegant boulevards, historic theatres and countless cafés, it offers an authentic Parisian atmosphere while placing many of the city’s highlights within comfortable walking distance. The ibis Paris Grands Boulevards Opéra 9ème sits right in the middle of it all. With several Métro stations nearby and an endless choice of restaurants, bakeries and cafés on its doorstep, it provides an excellent base from which to explore the French capital. I happened to visit during one of Paris’ summer heatwaves, with temperatures soaring well above 35°C. Under those conditions, a comfortable hotel room quickly becomes more than simply a place to sleep. Arrival and First Impressions The arrival experience was probably the weakest aspect of the stay. Having completed the online pre check-in beforehand, I was expecting the streamlined arrival promised by the Accor app, where guests are informed they simply need to collect their room key. Unfortunately, reality proved rather different. Two large families were checking in ahead of me, resulting in a wait of around twenty minutes despite having already completed the online process. The reception area is relatively compact and quickly became crowded, making the arrival feel somewhat cramped and chaotic. To the staff’s credit, they remained courteous, welcoming and professional throughout. The delay appeared to be a consequence of the hotel’s busy arrival period rather than the service itself, but it nevertheless took away from what should have been a smooth first impression. If the arrival was the weakest part of the experience, the departure was undoubtedly one of the strongest. Check-out was handled in a genuinely warm and personal manner. I felt recognised as a guest rather than simply another room number, and the interaction left a lasting positive impression. The friendliness and hospitality shown by the team deserve nothing but praise. One aspect that is worth highlighting is the hotel’s generous arrival and departure times. Check-in is available from 2:00pm, while check-out is not until 12:00 noon, allowing guests a little more flexibility than many city hotels offer. A Room That Exceeds Expectations I’ve stayed at a number of ibis hotels over the years and, if I’m honest, the brand can sometimes feel a little inconsistent. Some properties offer excellent value, while others leave a rather ordinary impression. Fortunately, this hotel falls firmly into the former category. Opening the door to my room was genuinely a pleasant surprise. The room felt noticeably more spacious than I had anticipated and, perhaps most importantly during a Parisian heatwave, wonderfully cool. The air conditioning was already running when I arrived and the curtains had been drawn, almost certainly to keep the afternoon heat outside. Whether this is standard procedure or a thoughtful response to the exceptional temperatures during my stay, it immediately created a welcoming first impression. The air conditioning itself performed exceptionally well. It was easy to adjust and quickly maintained a comfortable temperature after long days exploring the city. Overall cleanliness was very good throughout. The bathroom featured a spacious shower with excellent water pressure and consistent temperature control. Shower gel and shampoo were provided in convenient wall-mounted dispensers. One practical detail worth mentioning is the relatively low ceiling height above the shower. Because the shower tray is raised and requires a step up to enter, taller guests may find headroom somewhat limited. At 1.80 metres (5 feet 11 inches), I still fitted comfortably beneath the ceiling, but anyone significantly taller may find themselves brushing against it. The room was thoughtfully equipped with a small table and two chairs, a wardrobe, an in-room safe and a hairdryer. One feature that genuinely surprised me was the inclusion of a Nespresso coffee machine complete with original Nespresso capsules, while tea drinkers were equally well catered for thanks to the provision of tea bags and the machine’s dedicated hot water function. Regular readers of my reviews will know about my longstanding dislike of instant coffee sachets that still seem to populate so many hotel rooms. Credit where it’s due: ibis made an excellent decision here. It is a relatively small detail, but one that noticeably elevates the overall guest experience. The bed proved comfortable and came with a choice of both soft and firmer pillows, while conveniently placed power sockets on both sides of the bed made charging devices refreshingly straightforward. There is no refrigerator in the room. While one might have been useful during the exceptionally warm weather, it never proved to be a significant omission. Surprisingly Peaceful Given the hotel’s central Paris location, I had fully expected to hear a fair amount of street noise throughout the night. In reality, I experienced quite the opposite. The windows appear to provide excellent sound insulation, leaving the room impressively quiet despite the lively neighbourhood outside. It resulted in a restful nights’ sleep, something that cannot always be taken for granted in the heart of a major European capital. The air conditioning unit is certainly audible while operating. However, it produces a steady and consistent background sound rather than an intrusive one. Personally, I found it easy to ignore and it certainly didn’t interfere with my sleep. Lobby and Dining The hotel’s public areas are compact. The reception desk also serves as the hotel bar, making the lobby feel a little busy during peak arrival times, although outside those moments it remained perfectly pleasant. Tucked away behind reception is a small breakfast room which looked bright, welcoming and inviting. One thoughtful touch worth mentioning is the availability of complimentary filtered drinking water in the lobby. During the heatwave, it proved especially welcome after returning from a day of sightseeing around Paris. I chose not to have breakfast at the hotel, although this was entirely a matter of preference rather than price or quality. One of the greatest advantages of staying in this part of Paris is the sheer abundance of cafés, bakeries and restaurants just outside the front door. Fresh croissants, artisan coffee and traditional Parisian breakfasts are never more than a few minutes’ walk away, making it difficult to justify remaining indoors for the first meal of the day. Final Verdict The ibis Paris Grands Boulevards Opéra 9ème turned out to be one of the more enjoyable surprises of my recent travels. Budget hotel brands often require a degree of compromise, and my experiences with ibis have varied considerably over the years. This property, however, demonstrates exactly how good the brand can be when the fundamentals are executed well. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable, the shower offered excellent water pressure, and the thoughtfully prepared room (with the air conditioning already running and the curtains drawn) provided an immediate refuge from the Paris heatwave. Small details such as the Nespresso coffee machine and complimentary filtered water further enhanced what was already a very positive stay. The arrival experience could certainly be improved. A twenty-minute wait after completing an online pre check-in rather defeats the purpose of offering a digital fast-track option, while the compact lobby can quickly become congested during busy periods. Once checked in, however, there was very little to fault. The genuinely friendly and hospitable team, particularly at check-out, ensured that I left with an overwhelmingly positive impression of the hotel. Hotels in the heart of Paris are rarely inexpensive, and this property is no exception. However, considering its excellent location, comfortable accommodation and overall quality, I felt it delivered well on what it promised and represented fair value for money given its central location. Would I stay here again? Without hesitation; provided the price remained competitive. It is comfortably one of the better ibis hotels I have experienced and a property I would happily recommend to anyone looking for a reliable, comfortable and well-located base from which to explore Paris."
Would never go back to this hotel
"Still shocked from this experience. The second day we found two coffee cups spilled on my suitcase full of clothes I couldn’t wear for the rest of the trip. My suitcase was UNDER the table and the cups were perfectly spilling, almost like they wanted us to know. I immediately went to the front desk, they assured me they will solve the problem but after that NOTHING. we needed to buy new clothes because they didn’t even want to wash it, and we were staying for three more days. I tried to email them and of course nothing. Would NEVER go back."
Super hotel, perfect location
"Absolutely great hotel! We loved staying here. All the staff were super friendly. The rooms were spotlessly clean, warm and cozy. There was plenty of space and the beds were really comfortable. The location of the hotel is great - so central and easy to get to everything with lots of options for the Metro. There are heaps of lovely restaurants nearby, with lots of options for breakfast if you don’t eat at the hotel. Great value for money - we had two rooms as a family of 4 and although they were not interconnecting (the hotel doesn’t have any), the staff put us in a corner, so we were right next to each other and away from the main corridor. Can’t recommend this hotel enough!"
