"My honest review ~ I hope it helps other guests and the management of the hotel.
We travel frequently, especially now that we took early retirement, so can base this on many 4 star hotels that we have stayed in within Spain, islands and all over Europe and further.
The Roc Oberoy is a lovely, peaceful adults-only hotel with a few things to improve. I would personally give it a 3 star rating rather than a 4 star.
Firstly, overall, we had a lovely relaxing holiday. This is a nice, quiet adults-only hotel, and if you’re looking for somewhere peaceful rather than somewhere with lots of entertainment and noise, this certainly fits the bill.
We actually stayed here back in 2013, and it really hasn’t changed all that much in the intervening years. The rooms are starting to look a little dated, although ours was perfectly comfortable (415). The bathroom still had a shower over the bath, but the water pressure was excellent. The towels were lovely and fluffy and were changed whenever requested, and the beds were comfortable. The A/C was adequate.
There is a flat-screen TV in the room, although most of the channels are in German. Paguera is very much geared towards German visitors, but we were aware of this before booking, so it wasn't an issue for us. There is a small fridge which contained 2 bottles of water on arrival. You can request a mini bar for €15. There is no kettle or iron, but you can request these from reception, remember to bring a mug! For a 4 star hotel, these should be in every room.
Food & staff
The food was lovely, which was particularly pleasing for me as I don't eat meat or fish. There was still plenty for me to choose from, and the food was generally tasty and well presented. Nice selection of wines to have with your meal too.
The chefs were all a delight and clearly took pride in preparing and presenting food. I had a really nice omelette made for me on one particular morning.
The majority of the staff were also lovely. Raul deserves a special mention. He is always immaculate, engages with guests and remembers guests names. He seems to be constantly on the go, making sure guests are greeted when they arrive at the restaurant, taking drinks orders and keeping tables cleared. He is a real asset to the hotel. However, his Pina Colada requires some work! 🤣
There is also a young lady who was extremely efficient and hardworking as well as a younger guy who was equally good. They all contributed to making the restaurant experience enjoyable.
There was, however, one member of staff whose attitude really needs addressing. I don't do this lightly, but he is letting down the other members of the team, as well as the guests. I don't know his name as he wasn't wearing a name badge, but he was usually on reception and occasionally worked in the restaurant. I have attached a photo on the morning we were leaving. There was no-one attending reception and two guests as well as my husband and myself had to wait around to check out, finally "our friend" in the photo showed up. No lovely exit greeting just took the room key cards and that was it. On numerous occasions, he was sitting at reception watching videos on his phone. Every time we passed reception, he appeared completely engrossed in his phone and didn't look up or engage with guests. Definitely a training issue that needs to be resolved quickly!
On another occasion, he was standing near the dessert station in the restaurant. I was trying to get past him, but he was so engrossed in his phone that he didn't even notice me. I found this particularly disappointing and, in my opinion, it's not acceptable for someone dealing directly with hotel guests to be so indifferent towards them.
Check-in
Check-in was fairly smooth and the receptionist who dealt with us was very pleasant.
My husband had emailed reception before our arrival to request a high-floor room, and this was accommodated. We were given a lovely pool-view room on the 4th floor, which we appreciated.
The only disappointment was that we weren't offered a welcome drink, despite the drinks being clearly visible. I waited to see if we would be offered one, but we weren't, and I wasn't going to ask for it. What made this more noticeable was seeing other guests being offered one when they checked in.
It's only a small thing, but first impressions count, and it would have been a lovely touch on arrival after a particularly long journey.
Pool & location
The pool area was lovely and peaceful. There were no rowdy guests and no loud music — just a very relaxing atmosphere where you could sit back and unwind. The pool is open with a lifeguard from 10am-6pm.
There isn't really any evening entertainment, although one evening there was a lady singing for an hour or so, and she had a decent voice.
The hotel is also in a great location, just a short walk from the beautiful beach and the main street, where you'll find plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. You can easily pick up any essentials you need.
We also used the public bus from Palma Airport, which was an easy and inexpensive option. The A11 dropped us at a bus stop not too far from the hotel. Just a word of advice if you're using the bus for your return journey: allow plenty of extra time. Our scheduled bus didn't turn up, but fortunately we'd allowed enough time to catch the next one.
Getting out and about
Paguera is also a great base for exploring the area.
If you enjoy walking, running or hiking, there is a lovely trail up to the beautiful little village of Es Capdella. There's a lovely coffee shop/restaurant there where you can stop for refreshments before making your way back down. The scenery along the route is beautiful.
We also took the public bus into Palma, where we enjoyed a boat trip around the port before exploring the historic city, and we took another bus trip to Andratx. Both were easy and inexpensive ways to see more of the island without hiring a car.
Overall
We had a lovely, relaxing stay at the Roc Oberoy. It's certainly not the most modern hotel, and there are a few things that could be improved, particularly the behaviour of the one member of staff mentioned above (see photo) and the consistency of the welcome at check-in.
However, the peaceful atmosphere, comfortable beds, lovely food, friendly staff in general and convenient location make it a good choice if you're looking for a quiet adults-only break."
