"We recently stayed at the Park Plaza Histria Hotel and, unfortunately, the experience did not live up to the 4-star rating advertised.
The hotel is part of a very large complex with good facilities on paper, including swimming pools, sports courts and several restaurants. The pool area was excellent, always clean and well maintained, and the poolside toilets were spotless throughout our stay. The shower in our room was powerful with plenty of hot water, and when we reported a loose toilet seat it was repaired the same day. Staff were generally polite and courteous.
However, there were several areas where the hotel fell short of expectations. There was very little communication from the hotel regarding entertainment, activities or local attractions. In fact, there appeared to be no organised entertainment during our stay, and there was no information available about excursions, places to visit or things to do in the local area. Thankfully, the TUI representative, Miguel, was extremely helpful and provided advice on excursions and sightseeing opportunities. We particularly enjoyed the boat trip to Rovinj and Red Island, which represented excellent value for money.
The location was also somewhat misleading. The hotel is advertised as being within walking distance of Pula, but in reality it required either a 15-minute taxi journey or around 20 minutes by bus.
Dining options were disappointing. Despite the size of the complex, there were very few restaurants and most served similar menus. The burger bar was below average, and there was nowhere to purchase a simple snack or light lunch without ordering a full meal. It would have been much more convenient if drinks and light snacks were available around the pool area. Even basic bar snacks such as crisps and nuts were unavailable. The on-site supermarket was also extremely expensive, with everyday items carrying significant mark-ups.
The buffet breakfast offered a reasonable variety of food, but the quality was inconsistent. There was only one toaster, which struggled to toast bread properly and took a long time to use. Many of the hot breakfast items were lukewarm or cold, seemingly because they had been prepared in advance and left on hot plates that were not hot enough.
The room itself was disappointing. The bed and pillows were both overly soft and uncomfortable. Housekeeping appeared to consist of only a very basic daily clean. The bathroom floor showed ingrained dirt in the tile grouting, the balcony was not swept or cleaned during our ten-day stay, and the telephone was noticeably dirty. We also experienced an issue with one of the wardrobe doors, which was very heavy and came off its rail.
Although the reception and bar areas were generally clean and the front of the hotel presents a good first impression, the rear of the building looked tired and in need of maintenance. Balcony shutters and railings would benefit from repainting or replacement.
Another frustration was the lack of control over sunbed reservations. Many loungers were left occupied by towels for hours at a time despite not being used, making it difficult for other guests to find a place around the pool.
Overall, while the hotel has some positive aspects, particularly the pool facilities and helpful staff, it feels more focused on encouraging guests to remain within the resort complex than on helping them experience the surrounding area. With disappointing room standards, limited dining variety, a lack of entertainment and poor communication, we would not consider this to be a true 4-star hotel and would be unlikely to return."
