"We stayed here as a couple and we loved this place, although it had a few quirks and would not be suitable if you are looking for perfection and all mod cons! For us, it was more memorable than a new perfect type hotel, being very rustic and old fashioned. I also felt that fixing some small issues would make it a lot better!
For example, you are given a pool towel card on arrival. The pool towel station was inside the spa, a 5-6 min walk from our room and the pool by our room. We were given one rubbish small thin towel each and if you want to exchange it when wet or on a different day, we had to walk back there again. For a hotel at this level I would expect a bit better than this.
The hotel has a large car park and is in a remote location. I would not recommend staying here without a car. It was nice to be given a free drink voucher on arrival.
It is a quiet, large hotel. spread out as all low rise apartment style rooms, so from our room to the spa to the second pool and restaurant was a few mins walk. This was fine for us. We loved that the place was quiet, with no music blasting out around the pool.
Our room was spacious and clean with a comfy bed. The shower in the bathroom was over the bath and a bit low for my husband. The cleaners had a tendency to go into our room just as we were returning from breakfast and then stay in there for over half an hour while we had to wait outside with no acknowledgement/apology. We went for breakfast at the same time each day, so they could have just watched and adapted their times to do our room. Housekeeping was a bit sporadic with replacement of toiletries/towels etc. at times. We had to chase them for new things a couple of times. Our outdoor seating area had a leaf canopy roof that looked like it might collapse, but thankfully didn’t. Some things here are tired, but the air con was newly updated.
Some staff here were excellent, some didn’t speak English well and were a bit vague – possibly untrained. The lady in the spa was superb and gave us fab recommendations of places to eat and things to explore in Gozo.
There are lots of cats at this property – all well cared for, fed and friendly, but if you don’t like cats then something to be aware of. There was a batch of new born kittens when we were there, living in some shrubbery and available for snuggles and petting, which I loved!!!
The pool areas are lovely – 2 big pools and lots of sunbeds– but the water is cold. We had a very quick swim on day one due to the temperature, and the other days it was too cold. The indoor spa was great and saved us! There is a lovely jacuzzi, indoor/outdoor swim through warm heated pool and lovely new sauna. The steamroom was rubbish with hardly any steam.
We ate in the restaurant two nights and were pleasantly surprised, given the reviews we had read. The food was good, with huge portions. The first time the service was excellent. The second time it was a bit slow, but they did have a large party to serve.
The breakfasts were very good, except for the one grumpy lady making omelettes that took forever if you wanted fresh eggs. Surely more staff could be put on. They were tasty but the wait was too long. The fresh orange juice ran out fast and was not always replenished.
We would stay again, we liked this place, but I would expect it not to be everyone’s cup of tea. We could see how this hotel would have been spectacular in bygone days, and though past its heyday, for the right people, it is still a wonderful place to stay on Gozo."
