"Hotel review - late October 2025.
The hotel wasn’t the best choice for us as a couple, but that was probably more to do with the type of couple we are rather than the hotel itself, i hope this isn’t too critical because the hotel isn’t horrible at all. The review includes information for wheelchair users. Not four star in my opinion I’m afraid.
Area - the hotel is situated in an easily accessible area, (be careful as many hotels out there are up really steep hills) - there are lots of bars, shops and restaurants nearby, and close to both the old town and the sea-front, it is a beautiful part of the Island - slightly hilly in places, and a little more temperate than the South. We particularly enjoyed the more mature visitors. Although warning - if you haven’t got a transfer as part of your package expect to pay around 300 Euro or more in total for your taxi transfer from the South Airport and Back, you can hire a car but parking is paid. It is worth paying for a taxi to look at the shopping centre to the north of the resort if you like a designer shop or the biggest hyper-market you have ever seen in your life - it is huge!
The hotel itself has quite a corporate, modern feel, wheelchair friendly, although on the changeover days the lifts do get a little busy. On one changeover day we waiting around fifteen minutes for one that was empty enough to get a wheelchair in it, and the doors do close quickly so you have to be brave and hold the door with your hand. Entertainment, well there was a singer in the lounge, but apart from that we didn’t see anything else -
We took a sea facing Melia room on the 7th floor which was an upgrade from the slightly less expensive ones that overlooked the road on the other side, - beware the road, it can get a bit noisy, the sea-side rooms are much quieter. The sea-views in my opinion are worth the money. The hotel lounges and bars were nicely presented although I did feel that the drinks were on the slightly more expensive side for the area, but about right for a high class hotel - the prices about right for a four or five star hotel.
Back to the room, the balcony was of a good size, however if they wanted to upgrade the experience they might want to look at the canvas director style chairs out there, perhaps loungers would be slightly better and more comfortable, we couldn’t sit in them for any length of time. The beds were comfortable and large (two pushed together) with a good selection of pillows, there was a kettle (sachets but no, a mini bar (paid), and a tv with local channels. Plenty of plugs. If the hotel wanted to upgrade the experience then maybe a few more coat-hangers would be welcome, half a dozen for two people to share staying there for over a week wasn’t really adequate for our needs.
There was also an odd absence of drawers, not a single one at all, but plenty of shelves, so underwear etc had to go on them. We asked for an iron and ironing board to make up for the fact that we couldn’t hang most of our clothes up, and they all got really creased. There was no mini-line on the balcony, so if you are the type to rinse your smalls, or dry your swimming costume then this probably isn’t the hotel for you. There is a first class laundry service, but the price was also a bit first class as well - think London Prices. The safe is good, and included in the Price as is a good Wi-fi. There was a Mini-Bar, the prices clearly marked but again I wouldn’t call them a bargain, but helpful hint the shop over the road has good snacks at a fraction of the price, not sure if this was allowed, sorry if it isn’t, we only used them to snack in the room.
The bathroom is great, (floor can get slippy) okay our sink had a crack in it, but the shower was high powered and very hot, the bidet welcome, and it was all well lit, with plenty of shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and hand soap - towels if left in the shower on the floor are replaced, if you leave them hung up they will not be replaced. Don’t know what it is about the Canaries, perhaps the way the water is treated but after a few days, I didn’t feel as clean as I would in the UK even though I shower twice a day. The beds weren’t changed quite as regularly as I would have liked, but they were made up -
Now to the food - this is mostly a buffet style affair, and the food ranged from quite nice to unpleasant, there is no shortage of choice, fresh fruit, cereals, cooked breakfast, pastries, cheeses and meats, everything you might want, well almost. For meals they have cooking stations, so you can see the meat and fish being cooked, fresh eggs at Breakfast which you can ask for In any style - there is plenty of choice. However one of my pet hates - the food did seem to stay out for a long time under those nasty lights, so was often only just warm rather than hot, they do have a microwave, but who really wants to stand there for five minutes and have microwaved food in a four star hotel?
Another thing that annoyed me was the tiny tiny drinking glasses at breakfast, it’s hot out there and making sure you have enough liquids is essential so you have to go back several times to the drinks machines which adds to the queues. Coffee in the cafe’s out there is truly magnificent, unfortunately the same cannot be said for the hotel machine coffee which felt a lot cheaper in comparison, think old style British Rail - hint to the hotel - don’t cut back on the quality of your coffee to save money, life is too short for nasty coffee.
However, this is also a children very welcome hotel, and sadly some of the children didn’t really understand how to use to a buffet, why bother with tongues when you have fingers? - Why bother where your fingers have been? This is not the hotel’s fault - it’s the fact that people are on holiday, parents were often having some time off - and the kids are given the freedom to be kids.
So if you don’t mind your food being mauled about a bit, picked up examined and then put back by little people, if you don’t mind little ones pushing in, dashing across the dining room at high speed then you will be okay. It wasn’t chaos, it was just annoying at times - again this is not the Hotels fault it’s about buffet dining… kids having fun, (some kids were well behaved) and its not their fault that they are not very experienced with sharing food with lots of people.
if the hotel wanted to improve things then watch the kids around the food, and help them with selections - one young girl with long hair came along, picked up a plate which was low down on a shelf under the food, and as she bent down all her hair spread out all over all the cakes, she didn’t even notice. Another lad was absentmindedly having a good old scratch of his backside down his shorts, before picking up, changing his mind and then putting back some biscuits from the Buffet.
People not knowing how to use a buffet is not the Hotel’s fault. I’m guessing in a British Four Star Hotel, or even a decent bed and breakfast there would be a waiter service for cooked food - after a week the food did feel a bit repetitive, and a hint avoid the Pizza and Chips at all costs, disgusting! Over all - the food really could be warmer and I didn’t see anyone with thermometers testing the temperatures. Next time we will eat out, and probably not bother with half board. Handy hint for the hotel - Some British people like Blue Cheese after their main meal for dinner, as compared to other countries who like their Blue Cheese for Breakfast - putting out blue cheese in the evening would be nice for the Brits, just a hint not a complaint.
Drinks I thought were a bit on the expensive side, and the hotel seemed a tiny bit mean with water, four Euro for a litre of sparkling for a meal - which meant that we spent nearly forty Euro just on sparkling water at dinner for the duration of our stay, i don’t think it was bottled. The pool bar was okay, although the barman apparently didn’t know how to make a Negroni, he poured in Gin and topped it up with loads of ice and splash of Aperol Spritz - I pointed out that it should be Gin, Vermouth and Campari, so he poured some vermouth over the top - four drinks were over thirty Euro, my partner was only drinking house wine. this in a town where you can buy a bottle of wine for three or four Euro, a decent bottle for six to nine euro. In the end we chose to avoid the hotel bars, the local bars were much better value.
The pool was not heated, the kids didn’t seem to mind - and to be honest we didn’t see it getting cleaned either, we like a quiet pool so it really wasn’t for us, we only went once - it probably was cleaned but we are really not sure when it happened. There is a second pool upstairs with a sauna and steam room and jet beds, now this would have been ideal for us - but again nearly forty Euro for just ninety minutes use for a couple seemed a little steep (if you used it every day it would be an extra E400 on the price of the holiday. Note - this hotel does not have a smoking area at all, you have to leave the hotel, or stand outside.
Where this hotel really shines is the staff, who are pleasant, respectful and smiley, they are helpful with directions and look after you in all areas, they can’t be faulted, full marks. You can upgrade to their Level area, which has it’s own lounge, I can’t comment as we didn’t do that, we used up all our upgrade budget for a room with a sea view - there are so many lovely places to eat in the town, so I would say that we wished we hadn’t paid for their half board.
We left feeling that we wouldn’t return to that particular hotel, in many ways it’s not the Hotels fault, it’s just not for us - it didn’t really feel like a holiday hotel at all, especially when the wedding was on - more like a conference centre with kids. It’s not a bad hotel, it’s clean, well looked after and they try very very hard, but I would only give this hotel a three star, (by English Standards). I think that they need to decide what they want to be, but again, the hotel just made us realise that this sort of hotel isn’t for us, we enjoyed eating out in the lovely quiet restaurants in the area and cafes in the old town which are not expensive, so we may aim just to go room only, adults only - next time but as this isn’t an option here - it will be somewhere else."
