Mashama Bailey built her career in New York, before cementing her reputation in Savannah, Georgia, where she established The Grey with co-owner Johno Morisano.

A James Beard Award Outstanding Chef and the first African American to feature in a dedicated episode of the Netflix series Chef’s Table, it was nonetheless a bold move when she upped sticks, again with Johno, to open L’Arrêt by The Grey in Paris, where Southern food is less well-known. The risk paid off and the restaurant has been named an Opening of the Year by La Liste 2026.

The River Cafe, London

A very famous restaurant on the River Thames, owned and run by Ruth Rogers for nearly four decades, The River Cafe is not to be missed. The space is light and lively and filled with colour. The smell of fresh-baked pizza dough and red sauce pull you in and make you feel hungry!

What I order: I suggest having a pizza, any of the seasonal pasta dishes – and the gelati.

El Xampanyet, Barcelona

This family tapas place in the heart of Barcelona has some of the best food the city has to offer. One of my favourite things is the sense of community: the staff welcome you like family and make you feel at home. Be prepared to queue for a seat, though.

What I order: I get the razor clams when they’re in season. The dish reminds us that food can be simple and delicious.

MoKonuts, Paris

A very small restaurant in the 11th arrondissement. Open for lunch noon to 2pm Monday to Friday, the owners have taken work-life balance to another level! Their passion and energy show up in the food. Just make sure to reserve.

What I order: If the gnocchi is on the menu, get it! They also have a great wine list and serve excellent cookies for dessert.
