"Max Brown offers a comfortable alternative to the Museum District’s typical expensive or budget hotels. Location is excellent, about two blocks away from the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum, from trolley and bus stop (Museumplein), from the Blue Boat, from luxury shopping, the Vondelpark, and two to ten blocks from innumerable restaurants. Bus 397 goes to and from airport (6.50 Euro tap and pay) . Tram2 2 and 12 go to Amsterdam Centraal train station. Hotel is a not as sleek and modern as a quick glance at its photos might suggest. Entrance from street is up steep stairs. No elevator. Interior elevator for transport to rooms from main floor. Access to basement breakfast room requires stairs, and for room access they are an option—typical interior Amsterdam stairways, very steep and narrow. For these reasons, those with mobility issues should probably consider a different hotel. Hotel prices in Amsterdam are high, and can double on weekends. We booked through Expedia and paid a different price for each of our four nights, with a total about 50% higher than average room rate. Even though we paid the higher price on average, breakfast was not included. That’s an extra 14 Euro per person per day. It was described to us as “continental,” cold offerings with boiled eggs. We skipped that and chose late breakfasts at restaurants the staff recommended. Eggsbenaddicted, about a ten block walk, had great breakfasts in the 16 Euro range. The room had a comfortable queen bed, with just enough room to walk around it. A small desk and two stools completed the furnishings. Bathroom was small, shower, soaps, and towels excellent. TV, water boiler, cups, instant coffee, powdered creamer, teabags, sugar and stirrers provided. Our room was decorated in quirky rustic style with unfinished wood walls, open closet and shelves, room safe. Big windows opened, sliding shade and noise barrier. We cracked our window open to reduce the room temp (no control) and get fresh air. That meant we sometimes smelled cigarette and weed coming from the entrance area below where guys occasionally hung out to smoke outside. Little obnoxious street noise, though, from the mostly residential street. The main floor has a check-in desk and small bar, and a room to store luggage before your room is ready. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Recommended if you can find a good price and don’t require sleek and modern surroundings."

"The hotel is in a great location just outside the hustle and bustle of everything but close enough to walk into it or catch a tram. The hotel is designed very nicely and the receptionist Simon is very welcoming & helpful even to the point of leaving a hand written note and beers in the room for my partners birthday. The only downside on our stay was the fact they had run out of bottled water on day one and it wasn’t restocked, breakfast wasn’t great, coffee machine broken for 2 days and raw eggs put out. In our room we had 2 double beds, the problem was one of them was 2 single mattress so ended up sleeping in a massssssssive dip, we had to request to change rooms."
