Noto is a historic town in the south of Sicily, home to Noto Cathedral and a vast collection of Medieval ruins, as well as a wealth of Baroque architecture, making it the ideal destination for culture and history lovers. Walk the length of the Corso, stopping at the elegantly designed stately homes and sculptures; explore the cafés and gelaterie, and try the amazing seafood restaurants across the town, for a true taste of Sicily life.
Noto Cathedral is the city's biggest attraction; an amazing Baroque structure built in pale stone with an ornate façade and a number of domes and roof decorations.
Make sure to look out for the four major sculptures flanking the front entrance. The city is known as the “Baroque capital” of the region, and similar architecture can be found across the city, in particular at the Ducezio Palace, now the city's beautiful town hall, and the peaceful Monastery of Santa Chiara.
The Corso is the main road running through the city, and with so many attractions and hidden streets along the length of it, it can take a whole day to see all the main sights. Here you can head down Via Nicolaci and find the stunning Palazzo Villadorata, a classical palace boasting ornate balconies and a whole crowd of fantastical sculptures, from griffons to cherubs.
The gardens at the Corso's eastern end are an ideal shaded area for a walk or a picnic in the afternoon, while the town hall's impressive “Hall of Mirrors”-style dome is an incredible sight for those looking to explore the buildings further during a holiday in Noto.
Dining out in Noto is typically Sicilian, with fantastic fresh seafood and local wines on offer in the restaurants of the Corso and the small bistros hidden in the smaller streets and squares. Head to Baglieri il Crocifisso, a laid-back trattoria offering a tranquil and romantic evening out, or Le Ularie, where you'll find superb fish dishes and an excellent wine list, as well as a few cocktails for the end of the evening!
