Once upon a time, waking up with smeared mascara and hair reeking of smoke was the sign of a wild night out. Now, it\u2019s my souvenir of something a lot more wholesome, though just as sweaty: a visit to Tallinn\u2019s new public smoke sauna.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tucked away in a garden in the leafy forest suburb of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>N\u00f5mme<\/span><\/span>, lit by\u00a0twinkly\u00a0lights and a gently crackling fire pit, the homespun\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Rangi<\/span><\/span>\u00a0sauna is a world away from the panpipes and towelling slippers of the generic spa experience. Instead of warm\u00a0prosecco, we\u2019re drinking\u00a0kali, the traditional treacly beer brewed with Estonian black bread. Instead of scones and curling sandwiches, there\u2019s a simmering pot of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>hapukapsasupp<\/span><\/span>, sauerkraut soup with potatoes and salted pork. And instead of a massage and\u00a0mani-pedi, I have been vigorously hit all over with a sauna whisk made from eucalyptus leaves. Nobody has tried to\u00a0upsell\u00a0me body lotion.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
