As she wheels through hazy late-afternoon heat in Madrid\u2019s meandering\u00a0R\u00edo\u00a0Park, Valeria\u00a0Kechichian\u00a0aims a broad, companionable smile at a passing girl on a plastic skateboard.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you see?\u201d says\u00a0Kechichian, turning to the rest of the group after this stranger passes. \u201cShe had skater\u2019s knees. She was totally bleeding.\u201d If anyone is able to diagnose this specific and somewhat grisly ailment then it\u2019s this 40-year-old\u00a0Argentinian\u00a0longboarder\u00a0and action-sports revolutionary.<\/p>\n

In just\u00a0ten years,\u00a0Kechichian\u00a0has turned\u00a0Longboard\u00a0Girls Crew<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 which she co-founded as a loose collective of women cruising the streets of the Spanish capital \u2013 into a\u00a0bona\u00a0fide\u00a0global phenomenon. With sub-groups in more than 80 countries,\u00a0LGC\u00a0has deployed slickly edited viral videos (its biggest\u00a0YouTube\u00a0hits have millions of views each), along with continent-hopping meet-ups and a healthy dollop of fearless female attitude to upend\u00a0skateboarding\u2019s\u00a0male-dominated status\u00a0quo. They\u2019ve been featured on\u00a0ESPN\u00a0and\u00a0BBC\u00a0News and, in 2015,\u00a0Kechichian\u00a0\u2013 a supernova of multilingual charisma, covered in discreet, finely drawn tattoos \u2013 even delivered a\u00a0TEDx\u00a0talk about her four-wheeled fight against sexism.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
