It\u2019s the sort of scenery that makes you trip over things because you\u2019re looking up so much. The sort that makes you run out of storage on your phone because you\u2019ve taken so many pictures of it. The sort that makes you wonder if you\u2019ll ever see another view in the same way. The Dolomite mountains in northern\u00a0Italy<\/a>\u00a0are, quite simply, spectacular \u2013\u00a0but the chances are, most of the 6,000 cyclists who\u2019ll be touring them this Sunday 4 July won\u2019t have the energy to enjoy it.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s because they\u2019ll be racing in the\u00a0Maratona\u00a0dles\u00a0Dolomites, an annual event that takes riders round, up, down and beside some of the loftiest peaks in the region. Since 1987 this venerable\u00a0gran\u00a0fondo<\/em>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0literally meaning \u2018big ride\u2019 \u2013\u00a0has shut the roads to motor vehicles and made its lucky \/ unlucky participants push themselves to the limits of their fitness.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
