Behind him, a vast,\u00a0topsy-turvy\u00a0backdrop of churches and canyons, streets and homes, carved into a honeycomb hillside. We quickly discover that a\u00a0smartphone\u00a0cannot do\u00a0Matera\u00a0justice. Hollywood film crews are still trying.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the world\u2019s most ancient sites,\u00a0Basilicata\u2019s\u00a0\u2018Subterranean City\u2019 is built around a crop of\u00a0paleolithic\u00a0cave dwellings (Sassi<\/em>, meaning \u2018stones\u2019), dating back as far as 7000 BC. A\u00a0UNESCO\u00a0World Heritage Site, the\u00a0Sassi\u00a0housed thousands of people right up until the 1950s, when the government declared them unfit for habitation \u2013 disease-ridden, poverty-stricken, archaic. For years, the caves sat empty.<\/p>\n
