It\u2019s a warm spring evening on central\u00a0Berlin<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Rosenthaler-Platz\u00a0intersection. I\u2019m perched on a wonky fold-down bench by the open frontage of\u00a0Rosenback,\u00a0sipping a pop-top beer. Hip-hop blares inside. A young couple pour white wine into disposable cups, while two ruddy-faced men chase vodka miniatures with Berliner\u00a0Pilsners\u00a0at the table behind them. A staff member hastily re-stocks the fridges, as a\u00a0perma-queue snakes across the room, almost everyone in it waiting to buy cold bottles of\u00a0pilsner,\u00a0helles,\u00a0wei\u00dfbier\u00a0and the like, all at bargain, sub-\u20ac2 prices.<\/p>\n

As bars go, it\u2019s\u00a0vibey\u00a0as they come. Except it\u2019s not a bar at all. Rather,\u00a0Rosenback\u00a0is a 24-hour self-service bakery and convenience store \u2013\u00a0but hardly anyone\u2019s touching the\u00a0br\u00f6tchen, \u2018bio\u00a0milch\u2019 or toilet roll as they clink towards the counter. Welcome to the\u00a0sp\u00e4tkauf, \u201csp\u00e4ti\u201d, or late shop \u2013 Berlin institution, cross-cultural melting-pot, and the omnipresent pit-stop of any good night out in Europe\u2019s party capital.<\/p>\n
