Join the Turkish A-list in the small resort of Torba on the Bodrum peninsula. What was once a tiny fishing village, now has a relaxed but upmarket vibe, with some luxurious hotels and beautiful beaches. Glamourous yachts sit side-by-side with the traditional fishing boats – all adding to the atmosphere of the marina.
By day, head to the beaches that line the bay for sunbathing and watersports. By night, Torba has some great seafront restaurants where you can enjoy authentic Turkish dishes as the sun goes down. For a livelier night, you’ll find the occasional al fresco beach club night or there’s always the infamous nightlife of Bodrum just a short taxi ride away.
The bustling port city of Bodrum is famous for its party atmosphere – and is just 6km away from Torba. From elegant rooftop restaurants to stylish all-night clubs, there’s little chance of getting bored here. Whether you love to shop till you drop or explore ancient historic castles, the traditional white-washed streets of Bodrum offer a maze of Turkish treasures.
The beach resort of Bitez is popular with holidaymakers who want to unwind in unspoilt surroundings. This peaceful destination is home to one of the area’s loveliest sandy beaches, backed by forests and lined with seafood restaurants. Expect golden sands as far as the eye can see and a tranquil atmosphere.
The traditional town of Gundogan is a great place to enjoy laid-back Turkish culture. Enjoy the sunshine with a day at the beach, get back to nature among the olive groves or sample the local delicacies on offer by the harbourfront. The 9th-century Byzantine monastery is well worth a visit, while the ancient ruins of Big Rabbit Island (not nearly as critter-filled as it sounds, although there are some rabbits) are just a short boat ride away.
Hike the coastal trails
Torba is home to some scenic coastal paths that lead you gently along the entire Bodrum peninsula. Discover unspoilt bays along the way and don’t forget your camera to capture those stunning views across the Aegean Sea. You’ll find a variety of walks from easy to challenging.
Discover some ancient history
Torba has some interesting historic sights to see. In the hills behind the town, you’ll find the ruins of ancient Lelegian tombs – as well as some rather breath-taking views across the bay. The Byzantine monastery at the eastern end of the bay is also well worth a visit. If you fancy venturing further afield, you can take a boat trip to Didyma to see the famous Temple of Apollo and the historic sites of Priene and Miletos.
Dedeman Aqua Park
An easy 20-minute drive will bring you to one of Turkey’s largest water parks in the nearby resort of Ortakent. Dedeman Aqua Park boasts over 20 different slides, with something for everyone – from adrenaline junkies to young children. A choice of pools, a whirlpool and rapids all add to the excitement. Facilities are good with plenty of sunbeds and restaurants, offering a great family day out.
Torba has some fantastic Blue Flag sand-and-shingle beaches. You’ll find good amenities, such as sun loungers and beachfront eateries. The beaches can be quiet in low season and buzzing in the peak of summer, with many Bodrum residents de-camping to Torba for sunny beach days. The waters are clean and calm making them popular with water sports fans. You’ll find everything from windsurfing to parasailing on offer. The area is also famous for its dive sites – if you’re lucky you could spot some colourful marine life including turtles and dolphins.
Many sections of Torba’s beaches are privately owned by hotels, which usually means great service alongside your sunbathing (although you will be expected to buy refreshments if you settle in a private section). Some even add in the extra sand to their stretch of beach. The coastline is dotted with wooden jetties, ideal for jumping into the sea or watching sailboats come and go.
Turkish food is a happy marriage of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours. We’ve all heard of the famous Turkish classics of kebabs and Turkish Delight, but you’ll find plenty more dishes to sample. Why not start the day with a breakfast of kahvalti, made from fresh bread, honey and clotted cream, perked up by an intense Turkish coffee? Later, we recommend indulging in a long lunch under the shade of an umbrella enjoying sizzling lamb straight from the barbecue and some cold beers. You could even try the popular local yoghurt drink, Ayran - totally refreshing on a hot day! We also love Turkish pide, which are delicious flatbreads that come with an array of toppings from spicy meat to fresh veg. If you love a sweet treat, make sure you try the unique Turkish ice cream or some honey baklava topped with pistachio nuts.
Eating out in Torba is an authentic Turkish affair. Feast on giant sharing platters (or mezzes) and make the most of the village’s coastal location by ordering some freshly-caught fish and seafood. You’ll find some lively barbeque restaurants, serving kebabs grilled over charcoal flames (quite different to the kebab shops back home).
The marina is home to many of Torba’s best eateries, with everything from upmarket dining with bags of style to rustic tavernas. When the sun goes down and the candle-lit dining begins it has a beautiful atmosphere. There’s also a good selection of Mediterranean cuisines on offer, such as Italian pizzas and pasta. Nearby Bodrum has a wide range of restaurants if you fancy an evening excursion.
Holidays to Torba are a great excuse to take it easy and enjoy the Turkish sunshine. This small resort packs a punch when it comes to beaches and style, while managing to retain its laid-back, traditional atmosphere. From the family-friendly waters to the exclusive marina, Torba has something to suit all tastes. And the bright lights of party-loving Bodrum are right on your doorstep. What’s not to love?
