Ancient towns and forest walks

For many visitors, Estonia holidays mean a visit to Tallinn’s Old Town. That’s no surprise – its medieval streets are easy to explore and packed with things to do. But the rest of Estonia also has a huge amount to offer, with pristine lakes and forests, elegant towns and relaxed beach resorts. Estonia’s history is a big part of its appeal, but this is also a place full of energy, with buzzing nightlife and a buoyant tech sector. Tallinn is a case in point. The capital is home to ancient churches, grand merchants’ houses, Tsar Peter the Great’s palace and a hilltop fortress.

Traditional restaurants serve hearty stews and actors dressed as medieval townsfolk walk the cobbled streets of the Old Town. But dig deeper and you’ll also find contemporary art, glitzy clubs and hip coffee houses. East of the city, within easy reach, Lahemaa National Park offers a fine taste of Estonia’s outdoors. The ‘Land of Bays’ has lakes, woods and beaches, plus hiking and biking trails. Off the west coast, you can get more fresh air at Saaremaa, where pine forests and spas make Estonia’s largest island a thoroughly relaxing place. Other great cities include Tartu, with gorgeous 18th-century houses and a laid-back buzz thanks to its large student population.

The seaside resort of Pärnu is a great place for a dip in the Baltic, and hosts lots of cultural events in summer. The lovely thing about holidays to Estonia is that you don’t have to limit yourself. In this compact, well-connected country, you can get a great feel for Tallinn in a weekend, or explore the country’s biggest attractions in a week-long trip.

Three tips for a top trip

Have a Baltic feastYou can easily find high-end or international food in Estonia, but classic dishes here are filling, earthy and locally sourced, featuring sausages, herring, potatoes and cabbage.
Save with a Tallinn CardThe Tallinn Card is a good bet – it gives you free access to numerous museums, free public transport and discounts on tours and activities in the capital.
Be sure to say hiEstonian is similar to Finnish, and has been rated as one of the hardest languages to learn. Many Estonians speak excellent English, but a 'tere' (hello) will always go down well.

Best things to do in Estonia

Tour the Old Town

By day, stroll Tallinn's Old Town streets, sipping coffee and taking in parks and museums. At night, stuff yourself with a Baltic banquet before heading to the buzzing pubs.

Cycle around Lahemaa

The forests, coves, lakes and marshes of this lush national park are criss-crossed by good roads, making it possible to do some proper exploring on a hired bicycle.

Summer in Pärnu

Sand dunes, a promenade and a sandy beach make Pärnu a great place for a Baltic beach break – the resort is also famous for its mud baths.
