Holidays in Limassol

Cyprus is an island of opposites; Islam and Christianity, nature and cities, golden beaches and rugged hills. The city of Limassol – the second largest in Cyprus – perfectly embodies this. A blend of Byzantine, Venetian, Otoman and British influences gives this spot a unique and vibrant vibe which attracts holidaymakers from all walks of life.

Though it may be popular with tourists, Limassol has managed to retain its Mediterranean charm. Also known as Lemesos, the old town is full of character. It wraps around the castle and scuttles off into winding cobbled streets home to bustling cafes, delicious restaurants and trendy bars. Shopaholics are also spoilt for choice, with chic boutiques perfect for picking up a souvenir or something to wear to dinner on the beach. Families will find plenty to do, with many golden beaches to soak up the sun or enjoy some water sports.

We recommend visiting during the Carnival, which is held twelve days before Lent every year. The city comes alive with colour and music, and it will definitely be an unforgettable experience. Alternatively, you could also visit in September when the Wine Festival is on. If you can’t make it then, don’t worry. Limassol is beautiful – and warm – all year round.

Top Limassol resorts

Limassol town

From the charm of the Old Town, whose winding streets stretch all the way to the old fishing harbour, to the swanky Limassol Marina, the heart of Limassol welcomes all. Culture vultures have plenty to do and see, with the medieval castle housing the Cyprus Medieval Museum. The Municipal Market is a great spot to taste some local produce, and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants for foodies to discover. With beautiful beaches at its doorstep, Limassol is also a heaven for families who like their holidays full of charm.

Lofou

Holidaymakers looking for a taste of traditional Limassol and nature lovers seeking to discover Cyprus’s beautiful landscapes should stay in Lofou. The picture-postcard village is situated in the north-west of Limassol, 26km out of the city, and is worthy of a fairy tale. Lofou is made up of traditional structures, vine-covered stone walls and picturesque cobbled streets. An olive mill, the village church and a beautiful fountain offer plenty of opportunities for sightseeing, as does the museum. If you do the stunning nature trail, bring along a picnic of Lofou wine, zivania and palouzes.

Pissouri

Located 20 minutes away from Limassol town, and just a stone throw away from neighbouring region Paphos, Pissouri is perfect for families. Divided into the original village, a small yet charming spot to discover the Cyprus of old, and the beach resort, it’s a bustling area with lots to see and do. Relax by the beach and enjoy the views of Pissouri Bay while the little ones splash about, or enjoy a glass of wine or two in one of the lively tavernas lining the main square. Low-key and fun!

Things to Do in Limassol

Exploring Limassol…

Fun in the sun

Most of Limassol’s pretty beaches have been awarded a Blue Flag, the official European stamp of clean waters and good facilities. From the man-made Peninsula Beach in Limassol Marina to the hidden and full of mystery Zapalo beach – nestled beneath the Sanctuary of Apollo – there’s a beach to suit every holidaymaker’s needs. We recommend a trip east to the famous Governor’s beach, where you’ll find a good selection of water sports and plenty of tavernas for a drink or two. Pissouri Beach, with its combination of pebbles and sand and natural surroundings, is perfect for families.

Culture vulture paradise

There are plenty of opportunities to sightsee in Limassol’s historic streets. The medieval castle is a must-see! Don’t be discouraged by its rustic outside, the museum inside takes you on a journey of discovery through Cyprus’s rich and colourful past. We recommend walking to the old fishing harbour for a taste of traditional Limassol – and her delicious food. It’s also very easy to organise a trip to Kourion Ancient City from Limassol, where you can learn all about one of Cyprus’s wealthiest kingdoms.

Go shopping

From the marina to the cobbled streets of the Old Town and its charming boutiques, there are plenty of opportunities to pick up a souvenir in Limassol. Foodies won’t want to miss the Municipal Market, where fresh fruit and veg and traditional fare await.

Visit the zoo

Families can make their trip to Limassol extra special with a visit to the Zoo. It may be small, but it’s home to a big animal family and offers little ones the chance to learn more about the animals by feeding them as well as watching them!

Food and drink in Limassol

Cyprus cuisine

Cyprus cuisine is like it’s location, a cross between Asia and Europe. Middle Eastern flavours and Greek influences are sprinkled with a healthy dose of Mediterranean flair. Share a meze and indulge in a glass or two of local wine to experience the region’s tasty delights in style. We recommend sumptuous souvaki, lamb kleftiko and a traditional rabbit stifado for the meat eaters. And if you fancy something sweet? Go for some tasty Ekmek Kadayif!

Limassol Restaurants

Whether you find a tucked away taverna in Limassol’s old town or go to one of the many restaurants by the beach, there’s an eatery to satisfy every holidaymaker’s tastes. We love the MEZE Taverna restaurant.
