Útúrdúr (42 Hverfisgata). This recently reopened art-book store sells everything from books, catalogues, posters and more, as well as hosting readings, book slaunches and exhibitions. Open weekdays between 12-6pm and Saturdays from 12-5pm.

12 Tonar is one of the city's longest-serving record stores and a great place to find every kind of Icelandic band or artist you can think of. There's a tasteful international selection, too, as well as free coffee, listening posts and the occasional live concert (15 Skolavorðustíg, 12tonar.is, tel: 511 56 56).

Aurum, run by designer Gudbjorg Kristin Ingvarsdottir, this jewellery shop won Reykjavik Shop of the Year 2011. Pieces are inspired by nature and more elegant than many similar tourist shops in the area. Check the online store for a fuller range (4 Bankastraeti, aurum.is, tel: 551 2770).
