Everybody loves Bristol. Not only for its picturesque harbour, its Georgian streets, and its beautiful setting on the River Avon, but also for its lively music scene, world-class restaurants and beautiful countryside surroundings.  Located in the south west of England, Bristol’s setting can only be described as idyllic.

Riverside views surrounded by rolling hills and the city’s very own 400 acres of parkland known as The Downs all do their bit to attract tourists in their thousands. Once here, visitors can expect a city that revels in its pre-Victorian heritage with plenty of Georgian squares, crescents and churches to feast your eyes on. And when you’re not gawping at the magnificent buildings, you’ll no doubt be down at the trendy harbour checking out the bars, restaurants cafes and museums.

Take a wander up Gloucester Road on a sunny Saturday morning and find yourself drawn to the window of Paper Plane, a light and bright little shop where you can find the best of Bristol's independent artists. Head straight through to their exhibition space out back to see the next designer tipped for the top, then spend as long as you like picking out a print that best represents your time in Bristol.

Veto the classic Christmas fun of the city centre ice rink for something a little different this festive season. A quick zip down the motorway takes you to Westonbirt Arboretum, where you'll find an illuminated path through the trees, lighting up each of the impressive varieties to admire as you go. Wrap up warm, grab a bag of hot chestnuts and enjoy the spectacle. www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/beeh-a25gk2

If you've eaten your fill of Bristol's wonderful mishmash of culinary delights, it might be time to try something different at The Little Kitchen. This light and bright little cookery stall set above the city centre in Brislington offers all kinds of courses, from two-hour technical macaron classes to dine-in events where you eat the delicious treats that you make. The classes even include tips on gift-wrapping if you're planning some Christmas makes, although we might scoff ours before they make it to the recipient. We won't tell if you won't. www.little-kitchen.co.uk/
