Cheap flights to Faro
Faro is the gateway to the Algarve, a wonderfully sunny area of Portugal welcoming thousands of tourists every year. With year-round sunshine, miles of beautiful sandy beaches and flower-decked, whitewashed villages it’s not difficult to see why Faro is such a popular holiday destination.
Head to towns like Albufeira and Lagos to explore historic Portugese streets and stop a while in one of the region’s many restaurants to sample the mouth-watering local cuisine; Faro is not a place to head to if you’re on a strict diet. Venture along the beach-lined Atlantic coast to find resorts to suit every need, from the activity-filled child-friendly Lagos, Albufeira and Praia da Rocha to the luxurious marina at Vilamoura, and the historic towns of Silves, Tavira or Sagres.
Take a boat trip to the cave at Benagil, one of the most spectacular in the Algarve. Fishermen will take you from the beach at the little village of Benagil itself, or as part of a longer boat trip from the surrounding resorts.
Happening from 3 - 7 August, Meo Sudoeste is one of Portugal's best music festivals, in the little town of Zambujeira do Mar, on the coast just north of the Algarve. This year's line up includes Steve Angello, Wiz Khalifa, Martin Garrix and Seu Jorge. The full line up is on www.sudoeste.meo.pt. Also don't miss the wacky Festival Internacional de Escultura em Areia (FIESA), when international sand sculptors use 40,000 tonnes of sand to create astonishing figures and objects in sand at Pêra. This year the theme is music and it's on until 30 October, www.fiesa.org.
Head to the attractive inland town of Loulé, famed for its lively fruit and vegetable market and vibrant Saturday morning flea market. It also take centre stage for the Algarve's main carnival celebrations.
