Hire a bicycle at Toscana in Tour and explore the hidden corners of the city, such as the splendid Romanesque basilica of San Piero a Grado, 6km from the centre. There are also scooters to rent for the less energetic. www.toscanaintour.it

April 2017
Pisa parties each June with the Luminara (16th) when 70,000 candles light up the river, and the colourful San Ranieri regatta the following day. This year it's also Pisa's turn to host the Regatta of Italy's Ancient Maritime Republics (18th), a costume pageant and race against rowing-teams from Venice, Amalfi and Genoa.

July 2016
Take the train to Pescia (one hour away) where a shuttle bus connects with the Pinocchio park at Collodi, the medieval village where the story's author lived. It's a delight for kids and nostalgic parents alike and entry includes a visit to the tropical butterfly house and historic gardens. www.pinocchio.it

April 2017
The coastal town of Livorno makes an easy day out from Pisa (15 mins by train). It boasts two fortresses surrounded by water and some excellent foodie specialities including cacciucco, a hearty seafood soup.
