Cheap flights to Innsbruck

For incredible mountain views, fairytale-style buildings and some of Europe’s best ski resorts then look no further than Innsbruck.  Nestled in the Tyrolean Alps of Western Austria, Innsbruck is a city where activity rules. The locals here like nothing better than a spot of mountain climbing, trekking, snowboarding or skiing. Hardly surprising given that this city has twice hosted the Winter Olympics in the past. And when they’re not on the piste trying out the latest jumps they’re likely to be wandering the cobbled streets of their beautiful medieval city enjoying the breathtaking Alpine views. Now that’s what we call good living!

Located at the very heart of the city, Töpferstudio Kathrein is a charming ceramics studio that offers a wide range of hand made products including tableware, vases, decorative items and even jewellery. Töpferstudio Kathrein, Viaduktbogen, tel. 0512 573218.

The Tyrolean Folk Museum hosts an impressive collection of beautiful historical costumes as well as parlour interiors from different epochs. A particular highlight is a collection of ancient crèches, true works of art. 2 Universitätsstraße, tel. 0512 59489510.

Starting in mid November, Innsbruck hosts three picturesque Christmas markets. Whether you choose to just dawdle around and enjoy the atmosphere, taste the local specialties or shop for presents, the markets are definitely worth a visit. (Held at Maria Theresien Street, Marktplatz, Old Town and Hungerburg).

The contemporary Galerie Augustin is always a great place to check out while strolling around the city on a Saturday morning. The monthly changing exhibitions usually focus on Pop Art and post-impressionism, and have included the likes of Ekaterina Moré and James Rizzi in the past. Galerie Augustin, Seilergasse 17, tel. 512 570770.

Located in the city centre, the Markthalle is a temple for gourmets. From wine to handmade pasta, typical sausage specialties or organic dandelion honey, the place is great for both deli shopping and lunching. (www.markthalle-innsbruck.at)

The best place to get fresh regional produce is the weekly farmer's market at the Sparkassenplatz on Fridays. All products come from the region and the majority is even organic certified. Treat yourself to some yummy souvenirs like smoked meat, honey and home made jams. Sparkassenplatz, Friday from 8.30 to 14.30.
