The Grainger Market is Newcastle's largest traditional market, situated in a classically styled building in Grainger Street near Grey's Monument. This undercover market was the largest in Europe when first built in the 1830s and sells mainly meat and vegetables with a good variety of game available.

Established in 1882, Fenwick (39 Northumberland Street) is Newcastle's most famous department store. The shop's annual animatronic Christmas window display attracts crowds from throughout the country.

Seven Stories is the UK's dedicated gallery and archive celebrating children's books. As well as exhibitions throughout the year, however, it also hosts a huge collection of books for sale (sevenstories.org.uk).

Independent Fashion Space started life as a humble pop-up shop but its resounding success showcasing original youth-orientated clothing has led to it finding a permanent home in the centre of Newcastle (9 Grey Street).
