A daily changing of the guard takes place outside the Governor's home at the Convent in the centre of Main Street. It is generally around 11am, but check at the tourist office at Casemates Square, as it can vary.

Wonder at the sweat and tears that went into digging out the Siege Tunnels - arguably the world's most impressive underground defence system - before returning on the cable car and seeing the evocative Trafalgar Cemetery with its headstones of sailors killed at the Battle of Gibraltar.

One of the most spectacular Spanish pueblos blancos (white villages) is Casares, which sits on a rocky outcrop around 16km inland from Estepona on the coast (40 minutes' drive from the Rock). The village has an unspoilt charm, cobbled streets and stunning views.

Take a trip across the border to the European wind-and-kite surfing capital of Tarifa on the Costa de la Luz. The beaches here are some of the best on the Spanish costas and, at this time of year, there is plenty of towel space on the sand.
