A bustling café culture, spanking new high-rise developments and a new found vibrancy make Amman one of the up-and-coming cities in the Middle East.
Jordan’s capital might date back 5,500 years but it’s as modern a city as you’ll find in the Middle East. Known locally as the ‘White City’, today’s Amman is one full of trendy bars, cafés and international restaurants, coupled with a young and friendly population that know how to have fun. A redeveloped city centre has seen a host of modern apartment blocks, five-star hotels and luxurious shopping centres spring up in recent years giving this city a contemporary and almost European feel.
January 2013Wild Jordan has gorgeous fair-trade gifts; all the jewellery, cosmetics and leather goods are hand-crafted by local women at workshops located in Jordan's national parks (Shop Othman bin Afan Street, Jabal Amman, tel: 07 9771 1177).
April 2013Visit the Citadel's ancient ruins. The views over Amman are spectacular and it's the ideal way to get your bearings for a day's exploration of this city built on seven hills.
April 2013Head up to Ajloun Forest, an hour north of Amman, where April brings carpets of spring flowers to the hills of this woodland nature reserve. There are several guided walks that start from its visitor centre.
