Jordan’s capital might date back 5,500 years but it’s as modern a city as you’ll find in the Middle East. Known locally as the ‘White City’, today’s Amman is one full of trendy bars, cafés and international restaurants, coupled with a young and friendly population that know how to have fun. A redeveloped city centre has seen a host of modern apartment blocks, five-star hotels and luxurious shopping centres spring up in recent years giving this city a contemporary and almost European feel.

Head up to Ajloun Forest, an hour north of Amman, where April brings carpets of spring flowers to the hills of this woodland nature reserve. There are several guided walks that start from its visitor centre.
