Holidays to Inverness

Situated in one of the most beautiful locations in Europe, Inverness is an attractive city to explore on holiday. With excellent transport links and regular easyJet flights to the city’s main airport, Inverness is the perfect destination to explore the Scottish Highlands. Famous throughout the world for its proximity to Loch Ness, the Scottish city has an enviable rural location and is one of the oldest human settlements in the UK. Inverness is traditionally awash with visitors looking for the Loch Ness Monster in the high season. And while the city is not the biggest, there are plenty of exciting cultural and historic attractions to keep visitors entertained on holiday.

What to do in Inverness

No holiday in Scotland is complete without a visit to Loch Ness, which is universally considered to be one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the UK. One of the highlights of any trip to the loch is a visit to Urquhart Castle. The medieval stronghold remains an impressive stronghold despite falling into ruins. Urquhart Castle’s iconic ruins include a tower house offering beautiful views of the loch and wider area. Nearby there have been rumours of a sea monster since the 1930s and while modern sightings have become increasingly rare, the Loch Ness Monster is just one of the many myths and legends to be discovered in the Scottish Highlands.

Famous for its outdoor pursuits and activities, the skiing town of Aviemore and the Cairngorm National Park is an hour’s drive from Inverness. With its snowy mountains, ski slopes and picturesque green valleys, Aviemore and the Cairngorms is a must see attraction on any holiday to Inverness. Increasingly prosperous since the dawn of the new millennium, the capital of the Highlands was granted city status in 2000. Inverness is dominated by a pink crenellated castle, and is bursting with fragrance and colour throughout the summer. The city has more than 1,000 tubs and baskets of flowers and over 30 miles of fantastic floral displays in its gardens and parks. Inverness’s love of colour springs from the public nurseries in Bught Park and the crowning glory is the wonderfully relaxing Floral Hall, which has a tropical conservatory, cacti house, visitor centre and coffee shop.

Whilst on a holiday to Inverness you should go on a cruise along the Moray Firth, which is home to the most northern most population of bottlenose dolphins in Europe. Anyone departing Inverness harbour on a cruise should look out for grey seals, porpoises, razorbills, red kites and even ospreys. Some of the beautiful views on the boat include the historic Jacobite battlefield of Culloden Moor and nearby picturesque villages of Fortrose, Avoch and the Black Isle lighthouse.

Cuisine in Inverness

There are plenty of shops and affordable places to eat whilst on holiday in Inverness. Hosting some top quality Scottish and seafood restaurants, this relaxing city is proudly able to serve some of the finest venison, salmon and beef dishes in Europe. As a relatively small city, Inverness is not renowned for its clubbing or nightlife, but they do have a quaint collection of old pubs and inns.
