Cambridgeshire Holidays

The county of Cambridgeshire is dominated by the university city of Cambridge, but there are other historic towns to discover dotted amongst countryside of mostly flat fenland and farmland.

Things to do in Cambridgeshire

In the City

The delightful city of Cambridge is home to one of the most famous universities in the world, and has a city centre packed full of wonderful old buildings, historic pubs, cosy cafés, interesting boutiques and an attractive river.

Cambridge is famous world-wide due to its renowned university. Of all the Cambridge colleges – there are 31 of them – King’s College is the most famous, and the Gothic architecture of King’s College Chapel is impressive. Queens’ College with two delightful medieval courtyards is a must-see too.

Spend an afternoon in Cambridge punting down the peaceful River Cam. The area around the river is known as ’The Backs’, and is lush and green, with views of 13th and 14th century colleges. Take a 2-hour guided walking tour of Cambridge, or hire a bike and cycle around the city before heading out into the beautifully flat and picturesque Cambridgeshire countryside.

Out and about in Cambridgeshire

Peterborough has a 12th century cathedral with a painted wooden ceiling from the Middle Ages, and is the largest of its kind to survive. Take a walking tour of the city and see if you can spot a ghost at Peterborough Museum, housed in what’s said to be the most haunted building in Peterborough.

The historic town of Ely is one of the few places in Cambridgeshire located on higher ground, and because of that its impressive Norman Cathedral can be seen from miles around. Go inside to see its medieval masterpiece, an octagon that replaced the collapsed central tower in 1322. Visit the Stained Glass museum, featuring fine examples from throughout the centuries; stroll through the centre of Ely with its mix of Medieval and Georgian buildings, and have a picnic on a walk along the Great Ouse, the river that runs through the town.

  • Top Attractions: The Flag Fen Bronze Age Centre in Peterborough, where you can see the oldest wheel in Britain. In Cambridge visit The Fitzwilliam Museum, a 19th-century building housing an incredible amount of fascinating displays from 5th century BC Greek vases to Korean ceramics and French paintings by the likes of Renoir and Monet.
