Porto (Oporto)

A gem in the North of Portugal famous for its Port wine, Porto is colourful city, cherished as a World Heritage Site. Its unique quirkiness is attributed to the jumble of styles and eras which make up its foundations. On top of this, the city is a lively hub for all ages, sharing a love of culture, food and music which makes a city break to Porto a popular destination for tourists year upon year.

What to do in Porto

With the beautiful buildings and sculptures around the city, a tour is a must to appreciate its background. But some prefer to see Porto from the water, and therefore river cruises are a popular attraction and a great way to relax, and can be taken from all along the waterfront of the Duoro river estuary where the city lies. To really get a taste of Porto though, a cellar tour offers half day courses exploring the finest of Portuguese wines and is an excellent experience whatever the weather. Or to appreciate the outdoors, a trip to the Fundação Serralves offers lots to see with the impressive property, gardens and a contemporary museum within its grounds.

Porto is mad about football, and so a trip to an FC Porto game is a must for football-lovers in its impressive stadium, whilst its rival home team FC Boavista is also popular amongst the locals. However a Porto city break offers lots for those who prefer culture on their city break, the various concert halls around the city hold host to a wide range of music events throughout the year.

Porto’s Ribiera district comes alive at dusk as its student population heads out for a night of dancing and socialising around its bars and clubs, creating a brilliant buzz around the district until the early hours. However, even for those not wanting to party, the cafes and bars open late and are excellent for a laid back evening enjoying your city break. A walk along the waterfront is the perfect end to a night as the city lights glitter across the river.
