Holidays in the Algarve

With its beautiful climate, calm sea views and good reputation for golf, wine and great food, it’s no wonder that holidays to the Algarve are in demand. Situated on the southern tip of Portugal, the Algarve boasts more sunshine per year than California.

There’s no doubt that holidays to the Algarve are perfect for relaxation and unwinding on the beach or enjoying strolls into the towns. However, if you are looking for a more active holiday, the Algarve has it all. It’s ideal for surfing, dolphin watching and off-road safaris, as well as bird watching and hiking. Fancy a cheap Algarve break or are you already planning a holiday to Portugal? Read on to be inspired.

  • Who Goes There: Golfers, nature lovers and those who enjoy a good spa and a taste of luxury are all found in the Algarve because of its brilliant landscape and relaxing atmosphere.
  • Celebrities Who Love the Algarve: Cliff Richard, Ronan Keating, Nick Faldo.
  • When to Go: Whenever you like! The winters here certainly aren't cold, but most holidaymakers visit between June and October to catch the most of the sun.
  • Best Attractions: With plenty of Blue Flag beaches, waterparks and rustic traditional towns, the Algarve has lots on offer for everyone.

The most popular hobby in the Algarve is golf. Whether you are an amateur or skilled player, there’s a variety of courses and international players flock to the Portugal Masters at Vilamoura. Motor racing is also popular here, or you can slow down the pace and try horse riding along one of many countryside trails. You’ll never run out of things to do in the Algarve.

Exploring the Algarve

Whether you are a family, a couple or a group of friends looking for a good time, holidays to the Algarve will meet your needs. If you are looking for a lively party atmosphere, then Albufeira and Lagos are the places for you. With attractive beaches and buzzing nightlife, these resorts are perfect for 24-hour entertainment. Albufeira is close to Zoomarine, the marine theme park that is a must-see for family tourists.

For families wanting to enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere then a holiday to Quarteira or Vale do Lobo would be more up your street – both are friendly resorts that are suited to water sports, but with a quieter nightlife and the chance to unwind on unspoiled beaches.

If you want to experience the real Portugal, head for the cobbled streets of Silves- once the ancient capital of the region - and visit the medieval bridge and castle. To really get back to nature, the town of Olhao has great seafood and it’s in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Adults will also be able to try famous Portuguese wines on their holiday and the whole family can indulge in local food, such as Piri Piri chicken or olives.

Things to do in the Algarve

Portugal’s Algarve is one Britain’s favourite holiday destinations and it’s not difficult to understand why. With sandy beaches, rocky coves and a reputation for all things sporty, it’s a natural choice for groups, families or couples. You can tailor-make your easyJet holidays getaway to suit your needs, whether you want to be near a golf course to improve your swing or you’d rather be in a family-friendly resort with sea views.

  • Sun seekers: Lagos’ Praia da Marinha is known as the Golden Beach and it boasts clear waters and dramatic cliffs. The Ilha de Tavira is another great sandy spot, and you can eeasily catch a boat out to this island.
  • Food lovers: Try Portimão for its famous sardines, or head to Sagres to find upmarket restaurants overlooking the marina and enjoy a romantic seafood dinner.
  • Wine buffs: Sir Cliff Richard owns an award-winning wine business here in Guia, which you can visit. Fans of the Bachelor Boy may notice that the town has named a street after him!

Family Fun in the Algarve

  • There are several waterparks to choose from, including Aqualand, Atlantic Park and Zoomarine. If you want to hit the open waves then the water is warm all year round, and Ericeira is popular for surfing or bodyboarding.
  • Almancil Karting is a tourist favourite and it includes a Formula One replica go-kart track.
  • Tavira has a camera obscura that is popular with visitors. Step inside and see the surrounding area in a unique way: it is projected as moving image by beams of light.

History and culture in the Algarve

  • Silves is the best place to experience the old Algarve, as the town dates back to 1000BC. It has a hilltop castle that the kids will love.
  • The Capela dos Ossos in Faro is a small chapel made from the bones of monks. This gruesome but amazing sight was started by a monk in the 14th Century and it has to be seen to be believed.
  • Keen on local crafts? Pick up some traditional Portuguese souvenirs from the markets in Loulé, near Faro, or look for pottery being made in the workshops of Porches.

Nature in the Algarve

  • Need to get away from it all? See the edge of Europe at its most westerly point, Cabo St. Vincent.
  • If you fancy jumping on your bike or getting into the Algarve’s hiking craze, the best place to go is the Via Algarviana, a track that runs across the region, taking in Monchique and the Costa Vicentina Natural Park.
  • Bird watching is massive here, and you can join a guided tour or go at your own pace.

Nights Out in the Algarve

  • The largest club is Kadoc, which is near Albufeira, and it attracts international DJs.
  • Faro’s Rua do Prior has an energetic nightlife scene, with bars and clubs open until late on most days.
  • There are three casinos to choose from in the region, at Praia da Rocha, Monte Gordo and Vilamoura, should you be feeling lucky.
