Cagliari Holidays

The capital of Sardinia, Cagliari, is a city that has made great effort to keep its authenticity as it becomes a more and more popular tourist resort. Its efforts certainly pay off as in under 3 hours travelling you can step out into a Mediterranean climate, comparable to Southern California, and into a preserved Sardinian city full of character and charm.

What to do on holiday to Cagliari

Active holidaymakers will find all sorts to keep them busy while on holiday in Cagliari. Bike rides and tours are popular in the area, offering an alternative way to explore the landscape. The Meirana Golf Club welcomes golfers of all ages and abilities to play in a beautiful setting. Castello, the older part of the city, has a mix of interesting buildings surrounded by the original city walls.

The beaches in Cagliari vary from long stretches of golden sand to hidden coves and lagoons. Poetto beach is the largest in Cagliari and is a favourite for water sports fans, the sand feels like it carries on forever. The beach is split up into public areas and ‘club’ areas, the latter have an entry fee but there are showers and toilets and the sand is cleaned every night. For a quieter beach experience on your Cagliari holiday, head towards the Calamosca beach, a small bay with a beautiful reef.

With the whole of the beautiful island of Sardinia on offer while on holiday in Cagliari it’s difficult to decide where to start. Oristano is just over an hour’s drive away and is close to perfect as an escape from some of the more tourist based resorts in Cagliari. Oristano is home to some intricate architecture and the equestrian tournament, Sa Sartiglia. A bit further down the road is Tharros, a coastal resort with an active archealogical site that can be explored.

Sardinia is surrounded by sea, so it is not surprising that you will find a lot of seafood on offer surfing your Cagliari holiday. Expect it to be fresh and most likely barbequed; the best way to enjoy food in the sun. Along the main strip in Cagliari you will find a few international and Italian restaurants but you won’t find all your favourite fast food chains. The Sardinians love their cuisine and are keen to invite visitors to try their food, including their specialty dish –a suckling pig!

As the capital of Sardinia, Cagliari is a city that is well kitted-out for tourists with clubs and pubs, bars and restaurants lining Poetto beach. Quieter, trendy bars can be found away from the main hub towards the older city and the port and the smaller, more hidden beaches and bays along the coast are stunning at sunset, picture-perfect for a romantic stroll.
