Holidays in Agios Nikolaos have been popular with tourists of all ages for many years, and it is not hard to see why. This attractive resort is situated on the eastern side of the island of Crete, and occupies one of the most scenic sites along the east coast. Built on three hills, Agios Nikolaos is unique in that it has a large lake which connects with the sea via a narrow channel. This lakeside area is Agios Nikolaos’ centre with cafes, tavernas, fine dining restaurants and bars all clustered together around the waterfront.
Unlike many holiday resorts in the Aegean, winter holidays in Agios Nikolaos are a good choice, as the weather is still warm, if a little unpredictable, and the cafe bars and restaurant remain open.
Relax on holidays in Agia Nikolaos
On a holiday to Agios Nikolaos you are never short of something to see or do. Within the resort, along with the lake, there is the popular and central Kitroplatia Beach. Surrounded by bars, restaurants, hotels and apartments, the sandy Ammos Beach is just by the marina, and there are two further beaches just outside of town. For a beautiful but quieter beach try Almyros Beach, a kilometre south of Agios Nikolaos.
Away from beach life there are a multitude of shops selling a rich assortment of local crafts and food, and for those in search of culture, Agios Nikolaos has three museums with exhibits of artefacts excavated in the area, local crafts and traditions and natural history.
There is a great choice of places to eat close to Kitroplatia Beach, around the marina and by the lake. The nightlife is quite quiet here, so if you're wanting a holiday with a bit of buzz, check out deals on Malia Holidays.
The lakeside is also the place to go for ferry trips and excursions. One of the most popular excursions is to the former leper colony on Spinalonga, made famous by Victoria Hislop’s novel, The Island. Fishing trips are available, and it is possible to book a day on a wooden sailboat to nearby Kolokytha Island for a barbecue, fishing and swimming.
